Published: March 1990

The daily rumination time (DRT) and the nycterohemeral pattern of rumination were recorded in six ewes before mating and during late pregnancy and in one unmated ewe. The mean DRT was shorter during pregnancy (mean: 329 min/day) than before mating (mean: 435 min/day). The DRT of the unmated ewe remained constant. The nycterohemeral pattern of rumination changed little during the trial.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed ingestive behavior patterns of sheep over 24, 48, and 72 hours, focusing on the consumption rates of various roughages in a semiarid region.
  • Five roughage types were tested, with the highest dry matter intake observed for Nopalea cochenillifera (NUB), while sorghum silage required the most feeding time.
  • No significant differences were found between sheep and goat feeding behaviors or preferences for roughages, although the palatability indexes for NUB and Opuntia stricta were relatively high at 76% and 77%, respectively.

State transitions in the chewing behaviour of six half-breed (Île de FrancexTexel) yearling female sheep (Ovis aries L.) were studied by using jaw movements recorded continuously over 5 days at the end of a number of experimental periods from 21 September 1992 to 4 April 1993. The sheep were housed in individual pens.

Average daily and within-day nycterohemeral patterns of eating and ruminating behavior were determined in six Holstein-Friesian heifers (average BW = 427 kg) given ad libitum access to either corn or grass silage in a two-period crossover design. Rhythm components (number of cycles/24 h) were characterized by finite Fourier transform of the 24-h mastication activities as measured during 4 d by continuous jaw movement recordings. Average daily voluntary intake of corn silage was 8.

To characterize the normal nycterohemeral blood pressure and heart rate profiles and to delineate the relative roles of sleep and circadian rhythmicity, we performed 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring with simultaneous polygraphic sleep recording in 31 healthy young men investigated in a standardized physical and social environment. Electroencephalographic sleep recordings were performed during 4 consecutive nights. Blood pressure and heart rate were measured every 10 minutes for 24 hours starting in the morning preceding the fourth night of recording.
