The values and risks of an Intergovernmental Panel for One Health to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response.

Lancet Glob Health

August 2023

Department of Public Health, Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium; Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care, Utrecht University, Utrecht, Netherlands. Electronic address:

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the need for better global governance of pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR) and has emphasised the importance of organised knowledge production and uptake. In this Health Policy, we assess the potential values and risks of establishing an Intergovernmental Panel for One Health (IPOH). Similar to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, an IPOH would facilitate knowledge uptake in policy making via a multisectoral approach, and hence support the addressing of infectious disease emergence and re-emergence at the human-animal-environment interface.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder that affects about 1 out of every 54 youth and is characterized by impairments in social communication and functioning. ASD is a treatable condition though, and early initiation of interventions in the home and community can lead to improved long-term outcomes. Despite the clear benefits of early diagnosis and intervention, many youth, particularly from impoverished and minoritized populations, face tremendous barriers to accessing a timely formal diagnosis and critical early supports.

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the current quality of diabetes care in the USA, discuss barriers to guideline-recommended treatment adherence, and outline strategies for the improvement in care.

Recent Findings: Current treatment guidelines highlight the importance of glycemic control, use of novel medications with proven cardiovascular efficacy, and multifactorial cardiovascular risk factor intervention for the treatment of diabetes and associated complications. Albeit proven evidence for these guidelines, the vast majority of patients with diabetes remain insufficiently treated.

Problem: Traditional half-day continuity clinics within primary care residency programs require residents to split time between their assigned clinical rotation and continuity clinic, which can have detrimental effects on resident experiences and patient care within continuity clinics. Most previous efforts to separate inpatient and outpatient obligations have employed block scheduling models, which entail significant rearrangements to clinical rotations, team structures, and didactic education and have yielded mixed effects on continuity of care. A full-day continuity clinic schedule within a traditional, non-block rotation framework holds potential to de-conflict resident schedules without the logistical rearrangements required to adopt block scheduling models, but no literature has described the effect of such full-day continuity clinics on continuity of care or resident experiences within continuity clinic.
