Luminescent dendrimers are currently attracting much attention since coupling luminescence and dendrimer research topics can lead to valuable new functions. Indeed, luminescence is a valuable tool to monitor both basic properties and possible applications (sensors, displays, lasers), and dendrimers are macromolecular compounds exhibiting a well-defined chemical structure with the possibility of containing selected chemical units in predetermined sites and of encapsulating ions or neutral molecules in their internal dynamic cavities. In this paper we will review recent advances in this field focusing our attention on their properties in fluid solution related to light harvesting, changing the "color" of light, sensing with signal amplification, quenching and sensitization processes, shielding effects, elucidation of dendritic structures and superstructures, and investigation of dendrimer rotation in solution.

Starting from AIEgen-functionalized chiral [2]rotaxane building block, we have successfully synthesized a new class of chiral rotaxane-branched dendrimers through controllable divergent strategy for the first time, based on which novel chiral artificial light-harvesting systems (LHSs) were successfully constructed in aqueous phase by sequentially introducing achiral donor and acceptor. More importantly, accompanied by the two-step Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process in the resultant artificial LHSs, the sequentially amplified circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performances were achieved, highlighting that the chiral rotaxane-branched dendrimers could serve as excellent relay for both energy transfer and chirality transmission. Impressively, compared with the sole chiral rotaxane-branched dendrimers, the dissymmetry factors (g) values of the resultant artificial LHSs were amplified by one order of magnitude up to 0.

Electronic address:

Exploring novel and sensitive analysis methods for monitoring lincomycin (Lin) residues is of great significance since overuse of it would cause a serious threat to public health. Herein, a Zr-porphyrin metal-organic frameworks (Zr-TCPP) with covalently modified polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimers was synthesized as a novel intramolecular self-enhanced ECL reagent, which exhibited greatly improved ECL response due to the promotion of SO generation and the shortening of the electron transfer distance. Graphene oxide modified with gold nanoparticles (Au@GO) was synthesized as the quencher for the ECL sensor construction based on the quenching strategy.

Non-conjugated fluorescent polymers (NCPLs) are of interest due to their remarkable biocompatibility, processability and biodegradability. However, the realization of multicolor emitting NCPLs through structure modulation remains a great challenge. In this work, a series of novel yttrium-branched polyborosilazane (PBSZ) structures (PY1-PY3) were prepared.

A ratiometric electrochemiluminescence (ECL) aptamer-based sensing platform was fabricated for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) determination. Activated CdS nanocrystals/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CdS/MCNTs) and luminol-Pt/PAMAM nanocomposites (L-Pt/PAMAM NCs) were synthesized and used as cathodic and anodic ECL emitters, respectively. Amino group-modified aptamers were assembled on carboxylated magnetic beads, followed by hybridization with probe DNA functionalized L-Pt/PAMAM NCs.

Endo-Encapsulated Multi-Resonance Dendrimers with Through-Space Interactions for Efficient Narrowband Blue-Emitting Solution-Processed OLEDs.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

October 2024

Different from conventional luminescent dendrimers with fluorophore tethered outside to dendron, here we first developed endo-encapsulated luminescent dendrimers with multi-resonance (MR) fluorophore embedded inside of carbazole dendrons by growing dendrons through 1,8-positions of central carbazole moiety to create a cavity for accommodating the fluorophore. This endo-encapsulated structure not only shields the fluorophore to fully resist aggregation-caused spectral broadening, but also induce through-space interactions between dendron and fluorophore via intramolecular π-stacking, giving lowered singlet state energy and reduced singlet-triplet energy splitting to accelerate reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from triplet to singlet states. The resultant dendrimer containing 1,8-linked second-generation carbazole dendrons and boron, sulfur-doped polycyclic MR fluorophore exhibits narrowband blue emission at 471 nm with FWHM kept at 34 nm even in neat film, together with ~4 times enhancement of RISC rate constant compared to its exo-tethered counterpart.
