Inpatient consultative dermatologists play a critical role in the care of hospitalized patients with skin disease. Our review of the 2023-2024 dermatology literature identified several areas of active investigation relevant to inpatient dermatology. In this article, we highlight advances in the understanding of severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions, diagnosis and prevention of skin and soft tissue infections, and management of autoimmune blistering diseases (AIBDs).

Summary: Palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), characterised by excessive epidermal thickening of the skin on the palms and/or plantar surfaces of the feet, can be hereditary or acquired. Here, we report a case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of sub-optimally controlled diabetes mellitus presenting with fevers and decreased Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) to a tertiary hospital. She was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), with blood glucose at 40 mmol/L and ketones at 7 mmol/L, in the setting of a methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus necrotising soft tissue back infection.

Previous case reports hint ultraviolet A1 (UVA1) phototherapy as a novel adjunct treatment for acute cutaneous inflammations and neuralgia of herpes zoster, but its clinical effectiveness and safety in this condition are not yet proven by clinical trials. To determine the efficacy and safety of UVA1 phototherapy as an adjunct treatment for acute inflammation and neuralgia in herpes zoster. A total of 60 patients with moderate-to-severe acute herpes zoster were randomly divided into two parallel groups.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFSymmetrical drug-related intertriginous and flexural exanthema (SDRIFE) is a rare, symmetrical skin eruption triggered by various medications, predominantly beta-lactam antibiotics. We report the case of a 69-year-old male with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis who developed SDRIFE following the seventh intravenous administration of infliximab. The patient presented with symmetrical, pruritic erythema in the cubital and popliteal fossae, groins, gluteal and retroauricular regions without systemic involvement.
