Peripheral T-cell lymphoma: From biology to practice to the future.

Cancer Treat Rev

September 2024

Division of Hematology-Oncology, Department of Medicine, Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Recent advancements in comprehending peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) validate and broaden our perspective, highlighting their diverse nature and the varying molecular mechanisms underlying the entities. Based on a comprehensive accumulated understanding, the PTCLs currently overcome the most challenging features of any disease: rarity, incredible heterogeneity, and a lack of any established standard of care. The treatments deployed in the front-line are extrapolated from regimens developed for other diseases.

Launched in 1992, the FDA accelerated approval program grants drugs indicated in rare/life threatening diseases the ability to be marketed at a faster pace than through the traditional track. Each manufacturing company presents its drug to the FDA, and within 60 days it will determine if the drug is eligible for this path. Many drugs that were initially approved through this route, subsequently did not demonstrate their clinical benefits.

The extractant-assisted transport of metal ions from aqueous to organic environments by liquid-liquid extraction has been widely used to separate and recover critical elements on an industrial scale. While current efforts focus on designing better extractants and optimizing process conditions, the mechanism that underlies ionic transport remains poorly understood. Here, we report a nonequilibrium process in the bulk aqueous phase that influences interfacial ion transport: the formation of metastable ion-extractant precipitates away from the liquid-liquid interface, separated from it by a depletion region without precipitates.

Article Synopsis
  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasingly affecting a large global population, with many genetic factors associated with its progression.
  • Despite numerous clinical trials aimed at developing effective treatments, many have failed due to various limitations and confounding factors related to specific drug candidates like thiethylperazine and crenezumab.
  • The review aims to analyze these challenges in drug trial outcomes, suggesting that better preliminary assessments could prevent wasted resources in future clinical studies.

Introduction: Youth use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) is a continuing concern, making it important to assess evolving patterns, especially as non-tobacco, non-menthol (NTM) flavors were withdrawn for pod-based (but not disposable) ENDS in February 2020.

Methods: Trends in past-30-day (P30D) ENDS use and smoking prevalence, usual device type, flavor (tobacco, mint/menthol, or fruit/sweet/other), and regular/last-used brand in PATH Waves 4 (2017), 4.5 (2018), 5 (2019), and 5.
