Inclination atomic force microscope (AFM) imaging has been studied on the possibility to observe a pattern sidewall in contact mode or digital probing (step-in) mode for a line edge roughness (LER) or line width roughness (LWR). Analysis of the AFM tip bending and slipping indicates that it is serious problem to measure and control very fine patterns within an error of less than 1 nm in contact of the tip on the steep slop of the pattern, and it is very important directly to observe the sidewall at inclination angle. In experiments using pyramidal tip and steep Si pattern with about 90 degrees slop, it has demonstrated that the inclination angle is 35-40 degrees for faithful observation of the sidewall. We have observed the etched strip lines on the sidewall with a width of about 100 nm and a depth of about 6.4 nm. We have demonstrated that the inclination AFM is very useful for evaluation of the LER or LWR.

Here, we systematically investigate the effect of mesa/sub-mesa sidewall engineering on single-junction (SJ) and high-voltage (HV) deep ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (DUV LEDs). The configuration of ∼46° inclined angle of the mesa/sub-mesa sidewall and Al reflector optimally promotes light extraction of SJ/HV DUV LEDs. We further observe substantial improvements in the self-heating and external quantum efficiency (EQE) droop effects of HV DUV LEDs with an increasing number of sub-mesas.

This study fabricated 10 μm chip size μLEDs of blue-light GaN based epilayers structure with different mesa processes using dry etching and ion implantation technology. Two ion sources, As and Ar, were applied to implant into the LED structure to achieve material isolation and avoid defects on the mesa sidewall caused by the plasma process. Excellent turn-on behavior was obtained in both ion-implanted samples, which also exhibited lower leakage current compared to the sample fabricated by the dry etching process.

Modern photonic devices demand low-cost, scalable methods for creating periodic patterns over diverse surfaces including nonplanar and tipped ones, the examples of which can be readily found in fiber optics. Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) offer an attractive route for fabricating such patterns in a single-step straightforward procedure, where the temporal and spatial locality of the self-interference effects ensure robustness against variations of the laser processing parameters. In this work, we show the LIPSS-assisted oxidation of thin titanium films by near-IR femtosecond laser pulses as a promising technology for the production of regular gratings consisting of rutile ridges.

Static obstacles (tunnel sidewalls, barricades, etc.) on the side of mountainous highways change the spatial range of the road during driving, restricting the driver's freedom of driving while possibly triggering the driver's shy away effect, which poses a specific potential safety hazard. To understand the characteristics of driving behaviour in mountain highway tunnels with different tunnel lengths and lateral obstacles, nine tunnels in Chongqing were selected for real-vehicle tests, and data on driving trajectories, speeds and other metrics were collected from 40 drivers.
