Two new La(III) and Sm(III) complexes with enrofloxacin (HER, 1-cyclopropyl-7-(4-ethyl-1-piperazinyl)-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinoline carboxylic acid, C(19)H(21)FN(3)O(3)), [La(2)(ER)(6)(H(2)O)(2)]·14H(2)O(1) and [Sm(2)(ER)(6)(H(2)O)(2)]·14H(2)O(2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, TG-DTG and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Both of the complexes are triclinic system with space group Pī. The structure of the complexes show that each rare earth atom in both complexes was nine-coordinated. Two of the enrofloxacin ions acted as tridentate chelate and bridging ligands, while the others as bidentate chelate ligands. The binding reaction between the complexes and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was studied by UV-vis absorption spectra and fluorescence spectroscopy. The results indicated that the two complexes had a quite strong ability to quench the fluorescence from BSA and the binding reaction was mainly a static quenching process. The binding constants K ( A )/(L·mol(-1)) were 1.46 × 10(5)(1) and 8.59 × 10(6)(2) and one binding site was formed. The synchronous spectroscopy suggested that tryptophan residues were placed in BSA. It was also found that the two complexes exhibited greater antimicrobial activity than enrofloxacin at given concentrations.

In the binuclear title complex, [La(CHO)(CHN)(HO)](NO)·0.5HO, the two lanthanum ions are nine coordinate in a distorted trigonal-prismatic geometry. Each La ion is bonded to three N atoms of the Schiff base, 1-(pyridin-2-yl)-2-(pyridin-2-yl-methyl-ene)hydrazine and is coordinated by one acetate group, which acts in -bidentate mode and two acetate groups that act in -mode between the two La ions.

To examine the water-induced photoluminescence turn-on and its potential application in trace water sensing, a new series of [Ln(dmba)(HO)]·2HO, where Ln = La (), Pr (), Nd (), Sm (), Eu (), Gd (), Tb (), Dy (), Ho (), and Er (), were synthesized using dimethoxybenzoic acid (Hdmba). Their single-crystal structures and thermal and chemical robustness were investigated, and the effects of lanthanide contraction and noncovalent interactions were discussed. The photoluminescence and colorimetric properties of - were investigated.

Elucidating details of biology's selective uptake and trafficking of rare earth elements, particularly the lanthanides, has the potential to inspire sustainable biomolecular separations of these essential metals for myriad modern technologies. Here, we biochemically and structurally characterize () LanD, a periplasmic protein from a bacterial gene cluster for lanthanide uptake. This protein provides only four ligands at its surface-exposed lanthanide-binding site, allowing for metal-centered protein dimerization that favors the largest lanthanide, La.

New solid compounds of light lanthanide ions with 3-hydroxyflavone were synthesized in good yields (up to 85 %). The resulting complexes have been thoroughly characterized using various analytical and spectral techniques, including elemental analysis, complexometry, thermogravimetry, UV-VIS, FT-IR, H NMR, AgNPET LDI MS and fluorescence spectroscopy. The molecular formulas of the complexes were determined as follows: Ln(3HF), where 3HF-3-hydroxyflavone, Ln = La(III), Pr(III), Nd(III) and Ln(3HF)·nHO, where n = 1 for Ln = Ce(III), Sm(III), Eu(III), and n = 2 for Gd(III).

A new array of ternary lanthanide complexes of the form [Ln(hfa)(tpy-HImzphen)] have been synthesized and thoroughly characterized wherein Ln = La (), Eu (), Sm (), and Tb (); hfa = hexafluoroacetylacetonate; and tpy-HImzphen = 2-(4-[2,2':6',2″]terpyridin-4'-yl-phenyl)-1H-phenanthro[9,10-]imidazole. Incorporation of tpy-HImzphen onto the Ln-hfa moiety induced a bathochromic shift of the absorption window of the complexes into the visible region. Extensive investigations of the luminescence characteristics have been conducted both at RT and at 77 K to understand the deactivation pathways of the complexes.
