Compensation of the intracavity dispersion in the mode-locked oscillator is known to be one of the most important factors for ultrashort pulse generation. However, recent investigations of a Yb-doped fiber mode-locked oscillator revealed that precise third-order dispersion (TOD) compensation is not always necessary for ultrashort pulse generation, owing to the strong nonlinearity that compensates residual TOD without reducing its spectral bandwidth. The origin of the nonlinear TOD compensation has remained unclear. To investigate the process in detail, we studied the pulse evolution inside a 30 fs Yb-doped fiber mode-locked oscillator both experimentally and numerically, and we found that the nonlinear phase shift with a temporally asymmetric pulse shape introduces an appropriate amount of TOD that exactly cancels the residual cavity dispersion.

We theoretically investigate the impact of nonlinear dispersion of crystals and multilayers used in Laue-type pulse compressors (LPCs) on chirped x-ray pulse compression, as well as the optimization method for the configuration of LPCs. We also study the application of LPCs to compress chirped x-ray free-electron laser pulses based on the parameters of LCLS-II-HE. The results show that the optimal thickness is half of the Pendellosung period, yielding the best compressor performance with minimal impact from the nonlinear dispersion.

Attosecond observations of coherent electron dynamics in molecules and nanostructures can be achieved by combining conventional scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) with ultrashort femtosecond laser pulses. While experimental studies in the subcycle regime are under way, a robust strong-field theory description has remained elusive. Here we devise a model based on the strong-field approximation.

The white neutron source driven by an electron accelerator utilizes a pulsed electron beam to bombard a target, producing neutrons through photoneutron reactions. The white neutron source of photoneutron reaction has advantages such as compact structure, low cost, capability of generating ultra-short pulse, and wide applications in the resonance energy region, effectively complementing reactor neutron sources and spallation neutron sources. The development of high-current, high-power electron accelerator-driven white neutron sources is of significant importance for neutron science research and nuclear technology applications.

Background: Ceramic endosseous implant coatings have gained esteem due to their favorable osteoinductive and osteoconductive properties. However, such a layer may be prone to failure under in vivo conditions, which necessitates its modification.
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to modify an electrodeposited hydroxyapatite (HA) coating on titanium (Ti) with ultrashort-pulsed lasers for the incorporation of the ceramic into the sample surface and the texturing of the metal surface.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is a common emergency with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Current risk stratification scores for non-ST-elevation MI (NSTEMI) use subjective or delayed information. Heart rate variability was shown to correlate with prognosis following MI.
