The supercomplex organization of photosystem complexes was studied in various cyanobacteria, a glaucocystophyte and a primitive rhodophyte by blue-native PAGE with a wide range of detergent concentrations. In contrast to known cyanobacteria that produced the PSI trimer, a filamentous N(2)-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120 and a glaucocystophyte Cyanophora paradoxa NIES 547 had a PSI tetramer and dimer but no trimer at all. This was confirmed by sucrose density gradient centrifugation. A primitive rhodophyte Cyanidioschyzon merolae had two species of PSI monomeric complex with a light-harvesting Chl complex of a different composition. These results are discussed with regard to the evolution of the PSI supercomplex.

Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) complexes play pivotal roles in genome organization and maintenance across all domains of life. In prokaryotes, SMC-family Wadjet complexes structurally resemble the widespread MukBEF but serve a defensive role by inhibiting plasmid transformation. We previously showed that Wadjet specifically cleaves plasmid DNA; however, the molecular mechanism underlying plasmid recognition remains unclear.

The concept that dimeric protein complexes in synapses can sequentially replace their subunits has been a cornerstone of Francis Crick's 1984 hypothesis, explaining how long-term memories could be maintained in the face of short protein lifetimes. However, it is unknown whether the subunits of protein complexes that mediate memory are sequentially replaced in the brain and if this process is linked to protein lifetime. We address these issues by focusing on supercomplexes assembled by the abundant postsynaptic scaffolding protein PSD95, which plays a crucial role in memory.

The exposure of autotrophs to high light intensities significantly impacts their photosynthetic performance.
