Steroid-induced avascular necrosis of the femoral head (SANFH) is a progressive degenerative disease of the hip, primarily due to glucocorticoid (GC)-induced endothelial cell (EC) injury and compromised blood supply. Irisin is an EC-protective mytokine whose receptor is the integrin αVβ5. Caveolin-1 (CAV-1), a major component of caveolae, causes endothelial dysfunction when phosphorylated.

Microcytosis Merits Evaluation: A Case Report of Hemoglobin S With Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HbS-HPFH Syndrome).

Hematology-Oncology, Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Health System, Los Angeles, USA.

Microcytosis is commonly encountered in primary care. Among patients with normal iron stores or compatible family history, hemoglobin electrophoresis, traditionally performed with gel electrophoresis and now through combination capillary electrophoresis/high-performance liquid chromatography, can diagnose thalassemic disorders or, rarely, a hemoglobinopathy. We present a case of an incidentally discovered microcytosis in a 34-year-old male patient where the workup led to a diagnosis of Hemoglobin S with Hereditary Persistence of Fetal Hemoglobin (HbS-HPFH syndrome).

Background: 30-day mortality is frequently used to monitor and improve patient safety and quality of care. In this study, we compare 30-day mortality according to place of death, that is, during admission (in-hospital), postdischarge or after readmission for patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), cerebral stroke and hip fracture.

Methods: Administrative data for patients admitted with AMI, cerebral stroke and hip fractures to Norwegian hospitals between 2017 and 2019 were obtained from the Norwegian Patient Registry, enabling the estimation of mortality and readmission proportions.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD), is a rare avascular osteonecrosis of the proximal femur usually occurring in children between 5 and 10 years of age. The cause of ischemia leading to necrosis of the femoral head remains unknown. The goal of surgical treatment for LCPD is to improve the containment of the femoral head to restore the function of the hip joint and prevent further damage to the femoral head leading to premature hip osteoarthritis.

Background: Valgus osteotomy is a femoral head-preserving surgery to treat femoral neck non-union in young, active patients. The traditional approach, however, causes medialisation of the femoral shaft during valgus correction, which alters femoral anatomy and complicates conversion to total hip arthroplasty if head osteosynthesis fails. This study aims to outline a novel surgical technique, medial opening wedge valgus intertrochanteric osteotomy (VITO), and evaluate its clinical and radiographic outcomes, focusing on restoring hip biomechanics and improving union rates.
