Unlabelled: Nevirapine is a poorly water-soluble antiretroviral drug. Intravenous nevirapine nanosuspensions (NS) (457 ± 10 nm) were prepared by high-pressure homogenization. NS were surface modified by stabilizer adsorption, e.g., serum albumin, polysaccharide and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 1000. The NS were characterized for mean particle size, particle size distribution and polydispersity index. The targeting potential of the nonmodified and three surface-modified NS to the mononuclear phagocytic system (MPS) cells that serve as potent viral reservoirs was assessed by in vitro protein adsorption studies using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). The adsorption patterns were qualitatively identical, but showed quantitative differences. The relatively adsorbed high amounts of immunoglobulins indicate uptake by liver and spleen, observed quantitative differences (e.g., the amount of dysopsonin albumin and apolipoproteins) can modulate the organ distribution. Controlled in vitro optimization of the protein adsorption by surface modification of the nanocrystals can reduce the number of animals required for in vivo studies and accelerate development of targeted nanoparticles.

When the kidneys are injured, uremic toxins (UTXs) accumulate in the body, affecting other tissues and causing a loss of essential body functions. This study investigated the adsorption of blood plasma-laden UTXs on the surface of PCL fibers to assess their potential as an alternative to membrane dialysis materials. Using plasma containing 26 UTXs at a concentration similar to that found in end-stage kidney disease patients, we analyzed the adsorbed proteins and examined clot formation in normal and toxin-treated plasma in the presence of PCL fibers.

The release of algal organic matter (AOM) during seasonal algal blooms increases the complexity and heterogeneity of natural organic matter (NOM) in water sources, altering its hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance and posing significant challenges to conventional water treatment processes. This study aims to verify whether the (Granular activated carbon) GAC selected for the adsorption of NOM in sand filtration effluent can adapt to water quality fluctuations caused by AOM release, and identify the criteria influencing GAC adsorption performance. In order to investigate the effect of conformational change in pea protein isolate (PPI) on its emulsification properties, soy hull polysaccharides (SHP) were added to modify the conformation following heat treatment at 70-100 °C to improve emulsification.
