The Finnish disease heritage refers to rare hereditary diseases that occur in the Finnish population in a relatively larger proportion than in other populations. The genes underlying all of the 36 diseases of the disease heritage have been identified. Together with her group and collaborators, Leena Palotie identified 15 of these, and this review includes the description of some of these achievements. As a result of the so-called founder effect, one predominant mutation underlying these diseases occurs in our population, facilitating the diagnostics of these diseases in our country.

Background: Second-generation antipsychotic medications (SGAs) are often used by primary care physicians (PCPs) to treat multiple psychiatric diagnoses. SGAs have been connected to a number of adverse effects, including cardiovascular disease. Currently, there are no published evidence-based recommendations addressing SGAs and cardiotoxicity that are directed toward PCPs.

Background: Increasingly, research evidence is identifying subjective cognitive decline (SCD) as a precursor for cognitive impairment and dementia. Identifying predictors of SCD is essential for understanding its utility as a preclinical indicator for impairment and especially pertinent for Hispanics/Latinos who have limited access to healthcare resources and clinical diagnostics and are disproportionally affected by Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. We extend work on predictors of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) in diverse Hispanics/Latinos in the US by modeling multidomain predictors of SCD.

Background: Serum AD biomarkers are becoming useful to the early and accurate diagnosis of neurodegenerative disease, but much of this work has been done with clinic-based studies of mostly non-Hispanic Whites. For this study, we examined relations between plasma biomarkers Aβ 42/40, pTau 181, NfL, GFAP, ApoE genotype and cognitive state in the SOL-INCA-MRI study. Given that prior work in SOL-INCA found vascular risk to be associated with mild cognitive impairment, we included vascular risk measured by the Framingham CVD risk score and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) burden from MRI as additional predictors.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative illnesses place a heavy strain on the world's healthcare systems, particularly among the aging population. With a focus on research from January 2022 to September 2023, this scoping review, which adheres to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-Scr) criteria, examines the changing landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) applications for early AD detection and diagnosis. Forty-four carefully chosen articles were selected from a pool of 2,966 articles for the qualitative synthesis.

Radiation-induced cardiac disease: Modern techniques to reduce cardiac toxicity.

Pract Radiat Oncol

January 2025

The Legacy Heritage Oncology Center & Dr Larry Norton Institute, Soroka University Medical Center, Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Faculty of Medicine, Be'er Sheva, Israel.

Purpose: Continuous advancements in cancer management have resulted in increased long-term survival rates amongst cancer survivors and in turn have exposed the full extent of radiotherapy-associated morbidities. Radiation-induced coronary heart disease (RICHD) is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in cancer survivors, particularly in those having undergone mediastinal radiation. While mediastinal radiation has been shown to substantially reduce both recurrence and mortality rates in multiple thoracic malignancies, the risk for the development of RICHD is of significant concern.
