Article Synopsis
  • Designer drugs and low-level drug cocktails are challenging current anti-doping control programs, prompting the investigation of bioassays that can detect unknown drugs by measuring biological activity instead of relying on their chemical structure.
  • This review discusses advancements in activity-based assays used to identify doping substances and growth promoters in biological samples from athletes and animals, highlighting progress made and limitations encountered, such as interference from natural compounds.
  • The authors propose three key applications for bioassays: characterizing compounds for regulatory purposes, enhancing screening processes in testing programs, and aiding in the identification of drugs to tackle technical challenges in drug detection.

From fundamentals in calibration to modern methodologies: A tutorial for small molecules quantification in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry bioanalysis.

Anal Chim Acta

February 2023

School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Geneva, CMU - Rue Michel-Servet 1, 1211, Geneva, Switzerland; Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Western Switzerland, University of Geneva, CMU - Rue Michel-Servet 1, 1211, Geneva, Switzerland. Electronic address:

Over the last two decades, liquid chromatography coupled to mass-spectrometry (LC‒MS) has become the gold standard to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of small molecules. When quantitative analysis is developed, an analyst usually refers to international guidelines for analytical method validation. In this context, the design of calibration curves plays a key role in providing accurate results.

Extracellular vesicles for the treatment of central nervous system diseases.

Adv Drug Deliv Rev

July 2021

Louvain Drug Research Institute, Advanced Drug Delivery and Biomaterials, Université Catholique de Louvain, UCLouvain, 1200 Brussels, Belgium. Electronic address:

The interest in extracellular vesicles (EVs) increased during the last decade. It is now established that these vesicles play a role in the pathogenesis of central nervous system diseases (CNS), which explains why they are studied as biomarkers in these pathologies. On the other hand, EVs can also present therapeutic properties, often similar to their parent cells, as observed with mesenchymal stem cell-derived EVs.

Microfluidics has emerged following the quest for scale reduction inherent to micro- and nanotechnologies. By definition, microfluidics manipulates fluids in small channels with dimensions of tens to hundreds of micrometers. Recently, microfluidics has been greatly developed and its influence extends not only the domains of chemical synthesis, bioanalysis, and medical researches but also optics and information technology.
