  • The microbiology laboratory plays a crucial role in identifying organisms and enabling susceptibility testing through the detection of unique antigens or genetic material.

Article Abstract

There are several advantages in making a specific diagnosis of an infectious disease. In addition to better patient care with appropriate therapy, once the diagnosis is established considerable financial expense is spared and preventive measures can be initiated. The microbiology laboratory is vital in the isolation and identification of organisms. It is also possible by finding an antigen, metabolic product or nucleic acid unique to that specific organism that a diagnosis can be made and susceptibility testing can also be performed.

The global increase in urolithiasis prevalence has led to a shift towards minimally invasive procedures, such as retrograde intrarenal surgery, supported by advancements in laser technologies for lithotripsy. Pulsed lasers, particularly the holmium YAG and the newer thulium fiber laser, have significantly transformed the management of upper urinary tract stones. However, the use of high-power lasers in these procedures introduces risks of heat-related injury.

Now, 1 year after their release, we looked to assess practices and general adherence to these recommendations.

Methods: We conducted a survey among board-certified/board-eligible thoracic surgeons in the United States, between July and October 2023.

Background: Imaging and plasma markers are used as key indicators of disease for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) but their usefulness in predicting regional tau pathology is relatively understudied. Our objective was to construct predictive models for regional tau pathology measured on postmortem brain tissue using multiple ante‐mortem AD biomarkers. We focused on hippocampal and parietal regions that were immunostained with AT8 and 2E9 that reflect early and advanced aspects of tangle maturity, respectively.
