Published: November 2010

We present a new optical deflection tomography method that takes advantage of the phase-shifting schlieren. The reconstruction algorithm is based on filtered backprojection. The instrument is well adapted for three-dimensional imaging of spatially sparse objects exhibiting large refractive index variations. It achieves a 35 μm resolution with a 3 mm depth of field. Its performance is illustrated with a bundle of fibers immersed in a matching index solution.

Directional emission sources are required in wide application scenarios such as 3D displays and optical communication. The integration of beam deflection metasurfaces on emission devices can construct a compact directional emission source. However, most reported metasurfaces and metagratings focus on the deflection of linear polarized light with relatively small angles(< 30 degrees), which limits their further application for unpolarized light sources.

A reconfigurable holographic metasurface (HM) with multifunctional modulation of radiation and scattering for conformal applications is designed in this paper. Based on optical holography theory, a holographic conformal modulation mechanism is proposed, and the conformal surface impedance distribution of HM is derived. To illustrate this mechanism, the designed conformal reconfigurable HM is used to demonstrate a series of radiation and scattering modulation functions, with its reconfigurable property enabling dynamic beam control.

Waveguide coupling design is one of the most challenging topics in augmented reality (AR) near-eye displays (NED). The primary challenge stems from the necessity to simultaneously address two competing factors: the overall volume of the AR system and the occurrence of chromatic aberration. To address this issue, what we believe to be a novel tandem trilayer achromatic metasurface is specifically designed for waveguide coupling in AR NEDs, capable of achieving an achromatic effect in a nanometer-thin layer.

This study experimentally demonstrates metasurfaces capable of producing output emissions with deflection angles greater than 75 degrees. These metasurfaces are composed of high-aspect-ratio gallium arsenide (GaAs) nano-resonators on double-sided polished GaAs substrates, operating reflectively at a wavelength of 650 nm. Beyond deflecting the incident light beam, the metasurfaces are successfully shown to generate high-deflection-angle, doughnut-shaped emissions by incorporating vortex beam (VB) structured light with a topological charge of up to 8.

Optical metasurfaces have found widespread applications in the field of optoelectronic devices. However, achieving dynamic and flexible control over metasurface functionalities, while also developing simplified fabrication methods for metasurfaces, continues to pose a significant challenge. Here, the study introduces a PCM-only metasurface that exclusively consists of voxel units crafted from different phases of phase-change materials.
