Silicon, being in the same group in the periodic table as carbon, plays a key role in modern semiconductor industry. However, unlike carbon nanotube (NT), progress remains relatively slow in silicon NT (SiNT) and SiNT-based heteroarchitectures, which would be the fundamental building blocks of various nanoscale circuits, devices, and systems. Here, we report the synthesis of linear and branched crystalline SiNTs via porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) self-catalyzed growth and postannealing, and the connection of crystalline SiNTs and gold nanowires (AuNWs) via a combinatorial process of electrodepositing AuNWs with predesired length and location in the channels of the AAO template and subsequent AAO self-catalyzed and postannealing growth of SiNTs in the remaining empty channels adjacent to the AuNWs. Using the approach, a large variety of two-segment AuNW/SiNT and three-segment SiNT/AuNW/SiNT heteronanostructures with both linear and branched topologies have been achieved, paving the way for the rational design and fabrication of SiNT-based nanocircuits, nanodevices, and multifunctional nanosystems in the future.

The control of the sequential self-assembly processes of highly entangled (AgL) (n=2,4,6,8) and AgL coordination polyhedra using side-chain effects was studied via the introduction of linear or branched side chains into the tripodal ligands. In addition to changes in the intermediate polyhedral species affording the multi- pathway process, disruption of the kinetic control of the sequential self-assembly was observed, thus demonstrating the utility of steric control for the construction of 3D-entangled molecular materials on the 5 nm scale with high molecular complexity.

Peroxy radicals are key intermediates in many atmospheric processes. Reactions between such radicals are of particular interest as they can lead to accretion products capable of participating in new particle formation (NPF). These reactions proceed through a tetroxide intermediate, which then decomposes to a complex of two alkoxy radicals and O, with spin conservation dictating that the complex must be formed in the triplet state.

Biochars (BCs) derived from waste-branches of apple tree, grape tree, and oak were developed for direct solid-phase extraction (SPE) of five benzodiazepines (BZDs) in crude urine samples prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. Scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyzer, X-ray diffractometry, N adsorption/desorption experiments, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry characterizations revealed the existence of their mesoporous structure and numerous oxygen-containing functional groups. The obtained BCs not only possessed high affinity towards BZDs via π-π and hydrogen bond interactions, but also afforded the great biocompatibility of excluding interfering components from undiluted urine samples when using SPE adsorbents.

Acinetobacter baumannii, an opportunistic bacterium prevalent in various environment, is a significant cause of nosocomial infections in ICUs. As the causative agent of pneumonia, septicemia, and meningitis, A. baumannii typically exhibits multidrug resistance and is associated with poor prognosis, thus led to a challenge for researchers in developing new treatment and prevention methods.
