More things in heaven and earth: defining innate and adaptive immunity.

Nat Immunol

Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA.

Published: December 2010

Natural killer cells have emerged as key components of innate immunity with critical antimicrobial functions. New work showing that they can also be accessed by vaccination to deliver antigen-specific memory responses and protect against subsequent viral infections challenges the traditional distinctions made between innate and adaptive immunity.

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, Union Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Lung cancer remains the foremost cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Clinical observations reveal a notable increase in both the proportion and mortality rate among female non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients compared to males, a trend that continues to escalate. Extensive preclinical research underscores the pivotal role of estrogen in the initiation, progression, prognosis, and treatment response of NSCLC.

Dietary Astragalus polysaccharides (APS) get wide application in aquaculture due to their excellent immunoregulatory effects. However, little is known about the effects of dietary APS on vaccine potency in fish. In the present study, large yellow croakers (Larimichthys crocea) were injected with formalin-inactivated Pseudomonas plecoglossicida after APS feeding for 14 d and then challenged by live P.

Ataxia Telangiectasia Mutated (ATM) is a protein kinase traditionally known for its role in DNA damage response and cell cycle regulation. However, emerging research has revealed its multifaceted and crucial functions in the immune system. This comprehensive review explores the diverse roles of ATM in immune regulation, from lymphocyte development to its involvement in cancer immunotherapy.

Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) are found extensively in various environments, yet most are non-pathogenic. Only a limited number of these organisms can cause various infections, including those affecting the lungs, skin, and central nervous system, particularly when the host's autoimmune function is compromised. Among these, Non-tuberculous Mycobacteria Pulmonary Diseases (NTM-PD) are the most prevalent.

Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) has revolutionized the treatment of many cancers by leveraging the immune system to combat malignancies. However, its efficacy is limited by the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and other regulatory mechanisms of the immune system. Innate immune modulators (IIMs) provide potent immune activation to complement adaptive immune responses and help overcome resistance to ICB.
