Aim: This paper is a report of an evaluation of the effects of a transformational leadership training programme on Unit Charge Nurses' leadership practices.
Background: Current healthcare regulations in the European Union and accreditation efforts of hospitals for their services mandate transformation in healthcare services in Turkey. Therefore, the transformational leadership role of nurse managers is vital in determining and achieving long-term goals in this process.
Method: The sample consisted of 30 Unit Charge Nurses with a baccalaureate degree and 151 observers at two university hospitals in Turkey. Data were collected using the Leadership Practices Inventory-Self and Observer (applied four times during a 14-month study process from December 2005 to January 2007). The transformational leadership training programme had theoretical (14 hours) and individual study (14 hours) in five sections. Means, standard deviations and percentages, repeated measure tests and two-way factor analysis were used for analysis.
Results: According the Leadership Practices Inventory-Self and Observer ratings, leadership practices increased statistically significantly with the implementation of the programme. There were no significant differences between groups in age, length of time in current job and current position. The Unit Charge Nurses Leadership Practices Inventory self-ratings were significantly higher than those of the observers.
Conclusion: There is a need to develop similar programmes to improve the leadership skills of Unit Charge Nurses, and to make it mandatory for nurses assigned to positions of Unit Charge Nurse to attend this kind of leadership programme.

Tungsten bronze oxides have emerged as attractive materials for energy storage owing to their fast charge-discharge property. However, the internal weakness of low capacity and short cycling performance impedes their development in wide application. In this work, the tungsten bronze WNbO nanorods with preferred orientation (001) were prepared by hydrothermal method for the first time.

Combining energy harvesting with energy storage systems in a single device could offer great advantages for continuous power supply in both indoor and outdoor electric applications. In this work, we demonstrate a photochargeable sodium-ion battery (PSIB) based on a photoactive cathode of two-dimensional crystals of MoSe. This photocathode enables spontaneous photodriven charging of a sodium-ion battery cathode under illumination and an increase in the reversible capacity to 29% at 600 mA g compared to that under dark conditions during galvanostatic cycling.

The photovoltaic performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) has reached the threshold for industrial applications, but the cost of most high-performance organic photovoltaic molecules is too high to meet the needs of industrialization. Herein, two low-cost thiophene--quinoxaline (TQ)-based polymers, PTQ16-10 and PTQ16-20, are designed and synthesized by incorporating a benzotriazole (BTA) unit into the PTQ10 backbone, with the consideration of expanding the chemical modifiability of PTQ10 and thus optimizing its photovoltaic properties. The incorporation of BTA induces improved light absorption, up-shifted energy levels, more orderly molecular π-π packing, enhanced molecular crystallinity, and better charge transport capacity of the two polymers.

The folding of the guanine repetitive region in the telomere unit into G-quadruplex (G4) by drugs has been suggested as an alternative approach for cancer therapy. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) and chloroquine (CQ) are two important drugs in the trial stage for cancer. Both drugs can induce the folding of telomere-guanine-rich sequences into G4 even in the absence of salt.

High-precision molecular manipulation techniques are used to control the distance between radical molecules on superconductors. Our results show that the molecules can host single electrons with a spin 1/2. By changing the distance between tip and sample, a quantum phase transition from the singlet to doublet ground state can be induced.
