Cyanobacteria harvest light energy through multimolecular structures, the phycobilisomes, regularly arrayed at the surface of the photosynthetic membranes. Phycobilisomes consist of a central core from which rods radiate. A large polypeptide (LCM, 75-120 kDa) is postulated to act both as terminal energy acceptor and as a linker polypeptide that stabilizes the phycobilisome architecture. We report here the characterization of the gene (apcE) that encodes this LCM polypeptide in Calothrix sp. PCC 7601. It is located upstream from the genes encoding the major components of the phycobilisome core (allophycocyanin) and is part of the same operon. The deduced amino acid sequence shows that the N-terminal region of LCM shares homology with the other phycobiliprotein subunits and thus constitutes the chromoprotein domain. The other part of the molecule is made up of four repeated domains that are highly homologous to the N-terminal regions of the phycocyanin rod linker polypeptides. The predicted secondary structure of the different domains of the LCM is discussed in relation to the different roles and properties of this large molecule.

3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS) is synthesized by PAPS synthase (PAPSS) in two steps. In the first step ATP sulfurylase (ATPS) transfers sulfate group onto adenylyl moiety of ATP to form adenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (APS) and PPi. APS-kinase (APSK) then transfers the gamma-phosphoryl from ATP onto 3'-OH of APS to form PAPS and ADP.

The adsorption of small organic molecules on pristine VC MXene and its derivatives is investigated by first-principles density functional theory calculations. By employing state-of-the-art van der Waals (vdW) density functionals, the binding affinity of studied molecules, , CH, CO, and HO on MXene adsorbents is well described by more recent vdW functionals, , SCAN-rvv10. Although both CH and CO are nonpolar molecules, on pristine and oxygen-vacancy surfaces, they show a different range of adsorption energies, in which CH is more inert and has weaker binding than CO.

The primary function of terminators is to terminate transcription in gene expression. Although some studies have suggested that terminators also contribute positively to upstream gene expression, the extent and underlying mechanism of this effect remain largely unexplored. Here, the correlation between terminating strength and upstream mRNA stability was investigated by constructing a terminator mutation library through randomizing 5 nucleotides, assisted by FlowSeq technology, terminator variants were categorized based on the downstream fluorescence intensity, followed by high-throughput sequencing.

Flexible thermoelectric generators (FTEGs) can continuously harvest energy from the environment or the human body to supply wearable electronic devices, which should be a clean energy solution and provide an opportunity to satisfy the increasing power consumption of multimodal sensing and data transmission in wearable electronic devices. Here, the 64-pair FTEG was fabricated by introducing the plated through-hole and heterotypic electrode structures to optimize the thermal transport, showing the largely improved output power of 4.1 mW and record-high power density of 312 μW cm at a given ambient temperature of 15 °C inside a measurement equipment.

Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells are widely used in biomedical research relevant to cancer, toxicity screening, and viruses, as well as in the production of recombinant proteins for biopharmaceuticals. In this study, liquid chromatography (LC)-electrospray ionization (ESI)-higher energy collisional dissociation (HCD)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was used to characterize the surface and lysate N-glycans of CHO-K1 cells and analyze their structures. The relative quantity (%) of each N-glycan and absolute quantity (pmol) of total N-glycans were also obtained.
