Neuromuscular blocking agents are widely used in perioperative medicine to aid in endotracheal intubation, facilitate surgery, and in critical care/emergency medicine settings. Muscle relaxants have profound clinical uses in current surgical and intensive care and emergency medical therapy. This article reviews cyclodextrins, development of selective binding agents, clinical development, and future directions of sugammadex.

In this study, a magnetic carboxymethylated β-cyclodextrin (Mag/CM-β-CD) was developed as a carrier system to assess its capability on drug delivery application by forming an inclusion complex with amantadine (Amn) as a drug model. The synthesized inclusion complex (Mag/CM-β-CD/Amn) was analyzed using various techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, BET, TGA, TEM, VSM, and DLS. The encapsulation efficiency and drug release study of Mag/CM-β-CD/Amn were adopted using the spectroscopic method.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly aggressive brain cancer associated with poor survival rates. We developed novel mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs)-based nanocarriers for pH-responsive delivery of a therapeutic drug Paclitaxel (PTX) to GBM tumor cells. The pores of MSNs are loaded with PTX, which is retained by β-cyclodextrin (CD) moieties covalently linked to the pore entrances through a hydrazone linkage, which is cleavable in weakly acidic environment.

Two-dimensional layered structural materials exhibit a wide range of properties due to their ultrahigh specific surface area. However, achieving ordered exfoliation to obtain uniform two-dimensional structures remains challenging. In this study, we developed a supramolecular system by covalently bonding hexathiobenzene (HB) into β-cyclodextrin to create a light-responsive moiety, followed by coassembly with bipyridine and nickel ions to form a polypseudorotaxane (PR) system, which enables an light-induced exfoliation strategy for two-dimensional materials.

The solubility of commonly used anti-inflammatory drugs has become a significant concern in contemporary medicine. Furthermore, inflammatory arthritis stands out as the most prevalent chronic inflammatory disease globally. The disease's pathology is characterized by heightened inflammation and oxidative stress, culminating in chronic pain and the loss of joint functionality.

Food freshness monitoring and volatile amine detection are key to food safety. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of mixed-valence rhenium oxide quantum dots (MV-ReOQDs), synthesized via the hydrothermal reaction of α-cyclodextrin and rhenium ion precursors, in triethylamine (TEA) sensing. Spectroscopic correlation techniques showed that the developed MV-ReOQDs possessed mixed-valent rhenium, α-cyclodextrin as capped ligand, partially carbonized surface, and amorphous phase structure.
