Scholarly work in philosophy, positive psychology, and other applied disciplines reconceptualize humility as an important element of reflection, change, and growth, but the change has not been mirrored in the nursing literature. Humility has a rich heritage and may be an implicit but fundamental construct in nursing. The value of humility for nursing education and practice rests in its conceptual basis for strategies that are currently being used. It is on the ground of humility that self-reflection, response to weaknesses and accomplishments, and our orientation to relationships should rest.

Sharpe (2024) draws attention to the role that editors may play in perpetuating bias in the published psychological literature. While Sharpe focuses on perspective-related diversity in reducing such bias, I argue that identity-related diversity is paramount. Editors play an important role in diversifying the scholarly conversation by recruiting diverse reviewers and providing clear and encouraging feedback on submissions.

Leaders are realizing the importance of recognizing diversity and applying cultural humility for successful outcomes. When a difference in perspective is misunderstood or not adequately considered, the resulting conflict interferes with the accomplishment of goals and relationships. With the intent to advance mutual understanding and improve human interactions, a theory to guide nurses and other professions on how to appreciate diversity and apply cultural humility is presented.
