Recently, a new preservation medium consisting of ammonium chloride added to adenine, glucose, mannitol, citrate, and potassium phosphate, was described. Unexpectedly, the predominant effect on red cell storage was an initial elevation of ATP levels, followed by remarkable maintenance of these levels at 12 to 18 weeks with acceptable 24-hour survival. The aim of the study reported here was to investigate the reasons for the advantageous effects of the different constituents. With the new preservation medium, ATP content was maintained at acceptable levels for at least 8 weeks with low spontaneous hemolysis. However, similarly high ATP levels were also maintained in the absence of ammonium chloride. Comparable results were obtained on substituting sodium for potassium salts in the new medium. When the main cation in the preservation medium was replaced by sodium, the addition of ammonium or rubidium chloride did not provide an advantage. Therefore, ammonium chloride was not essential for this medium, whereas mannitol does seem to be essential in a solution whose content of nonpermeant solutes is hypotonic.

Seventeen 3-alkylaminoquinoxaline-2(1)-thiones and 3-alkyloxyquinoxaline-2(1)-thiones were prepared by a novel thionation protocol from the readily available quinoxaline-2,3-dione in excellent overall yields. This protocol starts with the chlorination of dione using thionyl chloride to give 2,3-dichloroquinoxaline followed by the reaction with equimolar amounts of -nucleophiles (primary amines and secondary amines) or -nucleophiles (phenols and alcohols) to principally afford 2-alkanamino-3-chloroquinoxalines or 2-alkyloxy-3-chloroquinoxalines, respectively. The chloroquinoxalines reacted with the thionation reagent -cyclohexyl dithiocarbamate cyclohexyl ammonium salt in ethanol under reflux to principally give the corresponding quinoxalin-2-yl cyclohexylcarbamodithioate that finally rearranges to give the corresponding thiones in 76-93% overall yields.

The process of viral entry into host cells is crucial for the establishment of infection and the determination of viral pathogenicity. A comprehensive understanding of entry pathways is fundamental for the development of novel therapeutic strategies. Standard techniques for investigating viral entry include confocal microscopy and flow cytometry, both of which provide complementary qualitative and quantitative data.

α-Terpineol and 1,8-cineole are two important compounds in essential oils. This study developed an efficient method to recover α-terpineol from model oil (MO) based on association extraction by in situ formations of deep eutectic solvent (DES) between α-terpineol and some quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) by hydrogen-bond (HB) interaction. Such interaction could be broken almost completely by the introduction of water, due to the stronger HB interaction between water and QASs, which could release α-terpineol by liquid-liquid separation and save the organic solvents consumption.

Optimizing nitrogen (N) sources has the potential to improve wheat tillering, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and grain yield, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study hypothesizes that combining specific N sources can increase zeatin riboside + zeatin (ZR + ZT) content in tiller nodes and maintain a higher ZR + ZT/gibberellin A7 (GA) ratio, thereby promoting tiller development, enhancing NUE, and increasing yield. The effects of N source treatments on two wheat cultivars, the multi-spike Shannong 28 (SN28) and the large-spike Tainong 18 (TN18), were investigated.

In order to solve the problems of long dissolution and preparation time, cumbersome preparation, and easy moisture absorption and deterioration during storage or transportation, acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), sodium p-styrene sulfonate (SSS), and cetyl dimethylallyl ammonium chloride (DMAAC-16) were selected as raw materials, and the emulsion thickener P(AM/AA/SSS), which can be instantly dissolved in water and rapidly thickened, was prepared by the reversed-phase emulsion polymerization method. DMAAC-16, the influence of emulsifier dosage, oil-water ratio, monomer molar ratio, monomer dosage, aqueous pH, initiator dosage, reaction temperature, reaction time, and other factors on the experiment was explored by a single-factor experiment, and the optimal process was determined as follows: the oil-water volume ratio was 0.4, the emulsifier dosage was 7% of the oil phase mass, the initiator dosage was 0.
