AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to identify the most common types of gambling among individuals facing gambling problems, focusing on current athletes, former athletes, and nonathletes with disordered gambling.
  • Former athletes tended to engage in skill-based gambling activities like sports betting and poker, while nonathletes were more inclined towards chance-based games.
  • The findings suggest that the competitive nature of athletes may drive them towards skill-based gambling, with initial evidence aligning with this hypothesis.

Article Abstract

The objective of the present study was to determine the forms of gambling that were the most prevalent in those having problems with their gambling. High-risk individuals who were experiencing difficulties with their gambling were examined. Specifically, the gambling behaviors of current athletes, former athletes, and nonathletes were investigated. Only members of these 3 groups with elevated scores on the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) were tested. Specifically, only those classified as disordered gamblers (SOGS score > or = 3) were recruited. Among these individuals with high SOGS scores, former athletes were more likely to participate in skill-based forms of gambling such as sports gambling and poker card playing, whereas nonathletes were more likely to partake in gambling games that were based predominately on chance factors. Also, former athletes were more likely to wager on the sport they had once played. Findings suggest that a competitive spirit may lead athletes to involvement in skill-based forms of gambling. While other explanations were considered, preliminary indicators support this view.

Gambling encompasses a wide variety of activities, and the structural characteristics of each form contribute to its potential risk. However, the literature does not fully agree on the risk levels of certain gambling forms. In this study, we classify less risky gambling forms (soft forms) based on public perceptions of their riskiness.

The Urgency Numeric Rating Scale: Psychometric Evaluation in Adults with Crohn's Disease.

Adv Ther

December 2024

Kennedy Institute, Translational Gastroenterology Unit and Biomedical Research Centre, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.

Introduction: Bowel urgency has recently been recognized as a Crohn's disease (CD) symptom that substantially impacts patients' quality of life. The Urgency NRS is a single-item patient-reported outcome measure assessing bowel urgency severity in the past 24 h (0-10 scale). We aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Urgency Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) in adults with moderately to severely active CD and to estimate thresholds for meaningful improvement and bowel urgency remission.

Cell-Penetrating Peptide Induced Superstructures Triggering Highly Efficient Antibacterial Activity.

Adv Mater

November 2024

Beijing National Laboratory for Molecular Sciences (BNLMS), CAS Research/Education Center for Excellence in Molecular Sciences, Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100190, P. R. China.

To endow non-antibacterial molecules with highly efficient bactericide activity is an important but challenging issue. Herein, a kind of cell-penetrating peptide octa-arginine (R8) is found to be effective in activating antibacterial ability when assembling with anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), while individual R8 or SDS shows poor or no antibacterial ability. By combined electrostatic, hydrogen bond, and hydrophobic interactions, R8 and SDS associate into wormlike micelle and lamellar structure by forming supramolecular self-assembling units, depending on their charge ratio (CR).

Article Synopsis
  • - Communities of Practice (CoPs) show promise in enhancing community-centered health promotion, specifically in addressing gambling harms among voluntary, community, faith, and social enterprises (VCFSE) in a city-region in England.
  • - The evaluation included 33 qualitative interviews and focused on building a mid-level program theory, revealing that the CoP helped foster community interventions through staff understanding and collaboration, despite inconsistencies in project-level outcomes.
  • - Ultimately, CoPs proved effective alongside VCFSE projects and individuals with lived experience, contributing to a knowledge base that supports the government's strategy for reducing gambling-related issues.
