Published: December 2010

A facile synthesis of ultrathin single crystal ZnS nanowires with an average diameter of 4.4 nm in high yield (close to 100%) was firstly reported through the pyrolysis of a single-source precursor (zinc diethyldithiocarbamate). The obtained ultrathin ZnS nanowires exhibit good optical properties and hold promise for future applications in nanodevices.

In the realm of photodetector (PD) technology, photoelectrochemical (PEC) PDs have garnered attention owing to their inherent advantages. Advances in this field depend on functional nanostructured materials, which are pivotal in improving the separation and transport of photogenerated electron-hole pairs to improve device efficiency. Herein, a highly photosensitive PEC UV PD is built using integrated self-supporting SiC/ZnS heterojunction nanowire array photoelectrodes through anodization and chemical deposition.

Article Synopsis
  • - We investigated the properties of ZnS nanowires and nanorods that are capped with surfactants, focusing on their behavior in organic suspensions and how their photoluminescence changes with concentration and washing cycles.
  • - Photoluminescence emissions increased when the concentration of nanoparticles decreased, suggesting that the arrangement of nanostructures plays a significant role in their light-emitting behavior.
  • - Techniques like synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering revealed complex liquid-crystal-like structures in the nanoparticles, with a hexagonal structure for nanowires and a more intricate arrangement for nanorods, indicating optimal photoluminescence relies on a specific amount of surfactant on their surface.

Activating and Stabilizing Lattice Oxygen via Self-Adaptive Zn-NiOOH Sub-Nanowires for Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Efficient and durable catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction are essential for realizing the large-scale application of water electrolysis technologies. Here, we report a novel Zn-doped NiOOH subnanowires (Zn-NiOOH SNWs) catalyst synthesized via the electrochemical reconstruction of Zn-NiMoO SNWs. The inclusion of Zn triggers a transition in the oxygen evolution reaction mechanism of NiOOH from the adsorbate evolution mechanism to the lattice oxygen mechanism, resulted from Zn's adaptive adjustment of coordination types, which also improves the reaction energetics, thereby enhancing the stability and activity.

Photoelectron-promoted metabolism of sulphate-reducing microorganisms in substrate-depleted environments.

The Key Laboratory of Water and Sediment Sciences, College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Peking University, Beijing, China.

Sulphate-reducing microorganisms, or SRMs, are crucial to organic decomposition, the sulphur cycle, and the formation of pyrite. Despite their low energy-yielding metabolism and intense competition with other microorganisms, their ability to thrive in natural habitats often lacking sufficient substrates remains an enigma. This study delves into how Desulfovibrio desulfuricans G20, a representative SRM, utilizes photoelectrons from extracellular sphalerite (ZnS), a semiconducting mineral that often coexists with SRMs, for its metabolism and energy production.

ZnS is an appealing material with wide potential applications in optoelectronics, sensors, and photocatalysis due to its fascinating properties, low cost, and eco-friendly. In this paper, we report the synthesis of ZnS nanowires and nanorods via a simple thermal-evaporation method using different concentrations of PbS as a dopant. The prepared nanostrutures were investigated in detalis using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).
