Stable free radical formation in fructose single crystals X-irradiated at room temperature was investigated using Q-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), and ENDOR induced EPR (EIE) techniques. ENDOR angular variations in the three main crystallographic planes allowed an unambiguous determination of 12 proton HFC tensors. From the EIE studies, these hyperfine interactions were assigned to six different radical species, labeled F1-F6. Two of the radicals (F1 and F2) were studied previously by Vanhaelewyn et al. [Vanhaelewyn, G. C. A. M.; Pauwels, E.; Callens, F. J.; Waroquier, M.; Sagstuen, E.; Matthys, P. J. Phys. Chem. A 2006, 110, 2147.] and Tarpan et al. [Tarpan, M. A.; Vrielinck, H.; De Cooman, H.; Callens, F. J. J. Phys. Chem. A 2009, 113, 7994.]. The other four radicals are reported here for the first time and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to aid their structural identification. For the radical F3 a C3 carbon centered radical with a carbonyl group at the C4 position is proposed. The close similarity in HFC tensors suggests that F4 and F5 originate from the same type of radical stabilized in two slightly different conformations. For these radicals a C2 carbon centered radical model with a carbonyl group situated at the C3 position is proposed. A rather exotic C2 centered radical model is proposed for F6.

The linkage of an imidazole-based N-heterocyclic olefin (NHO), containing a terminal CH2 donor group, with a phosphorus-centered diradical molecular fragment leads to an open-shell singlet diphospha-indenylide system, a new class of P-heterocycles, which can be interpreted both as a phosphorus-centered diradicaloid and as a zwitterion with a permanent, overall charge separation between the N- and P-heterocyclic ring systems. The rotation of the imidazole ring, which is thermally possible due to a central C-C bond with a weakened π-component, changes both the charge separation and diradical character depending on the dihedral angle, as quantum mechanical calculations indicate. By varying the bulkiness of substituents at the imidazole-based NHO, it was possible to obtain different diphospha-indenylide species with different rotation angles in the solid state and hence varying diradical character.

Unraveling the electronic structure of metal complexes can bring various catalytic possibilities for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the electronic effect of metal and ligands modulating and switching the reaction center for HER has yet to be comprehensively analyzed. Herein, we report nickel selenoether electrocatalysts which show tunable reaction centers (nickel or ligand) for HER using mild weak acetic acid in less deprotonating DMF solvent.

In the course of 266 nm nanosecond laser flash photolysis of carbazole (CBL) in acetonitrile, we discovered a new transient absorption band centered at 360 nm that has been heretofore unreported despite numerous reports on similar topics. To put some limits on possible transients responsible for this absorption band and thus to solve the mechanism of CBL photolysis, we employed the strategy of selectively blocking the CBL active sites by various modifications in the structure. This strategy was supported by the use of the solvent effect and triplet quenching by molecular oxygen.

Herein, we report the solvent-dependent reactivity of Fe(CO) toward AsF in either anhydrous HF or liquid SO. The reaction of Fe(CO) with the superacid HF/AsF leads to the protonation of the iron center and allows for the first-time structural characterization of [FeH(CO)] in the solid state, representing one of the most acidic transition metal hydride complexes to ever be isolated and structurally characterized. In the aprotic but oxidation-stable solvent SO, Fe(CO) is oxidized and dimerized to [Fe(CO)], which is isoelectronic with well-known Mn(CO).

A novel silver-catalyzed cascade radical isonitrile insertion and defluorinative cyclization have been developed to synthesize CFH- and phosphinoyl-containing quinolines from -isocyanyl α-trifluoromethylstyrenes. The reaction proceeded under redox-neutral conditions and allowed the construction of a highly attractive quinoline ring system, with the simultaneous formation of the CFH group and introduction of various phosphinoyl groups in a single transformation, showing operational simplicity, a wide substrate scope, good tolerance for functional groups, and remarkable atom-/stepeconomy. Mechanistic studies indicated that the reaction is likely to involve the participation of P-centered radicals and key carbanion intermediates.
