Purpose: Bone biopsies are currently conducted under computed tomography (CT) guidance using a battery-powered drill to obtain tissue samples for diagnosis of suspicious bone lesions. However, this procedure is suboptimal as images produced under CT lack soft tissue discrimination and involve ionizing radiation. Therefore, our team developed an MRI-safe pneumatic drill to translate this clinical workflow into the MR environment, which can improve target visualization and eliminate radiation exposure.

Currently, Magnetic Resonance arthrography procedures require two rooms and two imaging modalities: fluoroscopically guided needle insertion in a fluoroscopy suite, followed by diagnostic MRI in a separate MRI suite. The use of fluoroscopy for needle placement exposes patients to ionizing radiation, which is an important concern, especially in pediatrics. The need for two different rooms and coordinating times for these rooms complicates hospital resource scheduling and logistics.

The exact somatotopy of the human facial representation in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) remains debated. One reason that progress has been hampered is due to the methodological challenge of how to apply automated vibrotactile stimuli to face areas in a manner that is: (1) reliable despite differences in the curvatures of face locations; and (2) MR-compatible and free of MR-interference artefacts when applied in the MR head-coil. Here we overcome this challenge by using soft pneumatic actuator (SPA) technology.

Making use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for diagnostics on patients with implanted medical devices requires caution due to mutual interactions between the device and the electromagnetic fields used by the scanner that can cause a number of adverse events. The presented study offers a novel test method to quantify the risk of unintended output of acoustically stimulating hearing implants. The design and operating principle of an all-optical, MRI safe vibrometer is outlined, followed by an experimental verification of a prototype.

Introduction: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) conditional modes are a novel feature for certain Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved spinal cord stimulation (SCS) devices. However, there is a paucity of literature around the limitation of MRI-conditional modes ("MRI safe"), specifically in clinical scenarios where urgent MRIs may be needed. One such limitation is load impedance, referring to the circuit's resistance to the current being generated by the system.
