Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) in identifying worrisome features of mucinous pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs) and predicting long-term risks of cancer and mortality.
  • Of the 334 patients analyzed, 171 had mucinous PCLs, with 17% diagnosed with high-grade dysplasia or adenocarcinoma shortly after EUS-FNA, primarily associated with worrisome features like solid components in the cysts.
  • The findings suggest that EUS-FNA is an effective tool for risk stratification, indicating that most patients without worrisome EUS-FNA features have a low risk of developing cancer

Unveiling the Masquerade: Early Gastric Cancer Mimicking Advanced Disease with Ectopic Pancreas Intrusion.

Ann Ital Chir

December 2024

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Bologna, 40126 Bologna, Italy; General and Oncologic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Morgagni-Pierantoni Hospital, 47121 Forlì, Italy.

Gastric cancer is a significant health concern worldwide, and its diagnosis and management are of paramount importance. Ectopic pancreas (EP) refers to an embryological abnormality where healthy pancreatic tissue develops without anatomical, vascular, or neural communication with the normal pancreas. We report the case of a patient whose initial endoscopic evaluation suggested early gastric cancer, but computed tomography scan (CT scan) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) indicated a locally advanced tumor.

Background/aims: Biliary obstruction drainage in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is associated with symptom palliation, improved access to chemotherapy, and improved survival. Stent placement and exchange via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography biliary drainage risk traversing the HCC, a hypervascular tumor and causing bleeding. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) potentially prevents procedure-related bleeding.

Purpose: The main objectives were to study differences between the first and the fourth cycle in dosimetry variables in patients treated for neuroendocrine tumours with four cycles of [Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE, as well as to look for absorbed dose-effect correlations aiming to help individualise and optimise this therapy for future patients.

Material And Methods: SPECT based dosimetry of tumour lesions and kidneys was performed in the first and the fourth cycles of the [Lu]Lu-DOTA-TATE treatments for 17 patients from 2020 to 2023. Clinical variables of interest were collected in order to look for correlations with some dosimetry variables.

Bacterial cellulose/thiolated chitosan nanoparticles hybrid antimicrobial dressing for curcumin delivery.

December 2024

'Materials+Technology' Group, Engineering School of Gipuzkoa, Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Pza. Europa 1, 20018, Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain. Electronic address:

Thiolated chitosan (Cs-SH) nanoparticles were synthesized and incorporated into bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes through vacuum-assisted confinement. Thiolation significantly enhanced the intrinsic adhesion capacity of chitosan (Cs) as well as its solubility in neutral aqueous solutions. Subsequently, Cs-SH nanoparticles were successfully loaded with curcumin (Cur-Cs-SH), with nanoparticle sizes of 121 ± 2 nm for Cs-SH and 152 ± 6 nm for Cur-Cs-SH.
