Background: Anxiety disorders are common in alcohol use disorder (AUD) treatment patients. Such co-occurring conditions ("comorbidity") have negative prognostic implications for AUD treatment outcomes, yet they commonly go unaddressed in standard AUD care. Over a decade ago, we developed and validated a cognitive behavioral therapy intervention to supplement standard AUD care that, when delivered by trained therapists, improves outcomes in comorbid patients.

Could Metamaterials be the Next Frontier of Catalysis?

Small

December 2024

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Engineering Building A, The University of Manchester, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9PL, UK.

Plasmonic catalysis, whereby either an optically resonating metal couples to a catalytic material or a catalytic metal particle achieves optical resonance, has been a mainstay of photo-catalysis research for the past few decades. However, a new field of metal-dielectric metamaterials, including plasmonic metamaterials, is emerging as the next frontier in catalysis research. With new optical behaviors that can be achieved by sub-wavelength structures, in either periodic or semi-periodic arrangements, metamaterials can overcome some of the limitations of conventional plasmonic catalysis.

Erdheim-Chester Disease: A Case Report Exploring Multisystemic Involvement.

Cureus

November 2024

Neuroradiology, Unidade Local de Saúde Vila Nova de Gaia | Espinho, Vila Nova de Gaia, PRT.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare, multisystemic, non-Langerhans cell histiocytic neoplasm predominantly affecting middle-aged males in their fifth to seventh decades of life. It often presents with nonspecific symptoms, leading to a delay in its diagnosis. We report a case of an 85-year-old male with multisystemic manifestations, including retroperitoneal, skeletal, vascular, cardiac, orbital, and central nervous system (CNS) involvement.
