This paper studies Lamarck's evolutionary thought through four analytic elements. Firstly, Lamarckian construction of a founding evolutionary archetype. Secondly, the interpretation of nature as a material system where the organic change represents a continuous process aimed at the adaptative conservation of life. Thirdly, the definition of a genealogical process on the origin of species which identifies the natural method. Fourthly, the redefinition of the concept of species applying the arguments of temporary relativity and individual instability.

Oil spills are a major cause of pollution impacting marine ecosystems. In this work, the effects of short-term exposure to three different concentrations of a hydrocarbon mixture (HC), that simulated the action of such an event, were investigated on Mytilus galloprovincialis specimens. Physiological effects were measured using a battery of biomarkers consisting of cellular activity (phagocytosis), immune-related enzymes, chaperonins (HSP70 and HSC70), and histomorphological alterations.

The effect of water acidification in combination with normoxia or hypoxia on the antioxidant capacity and oxidative stress markers in gills and hemolymph of the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), as well as on gill microstructure, has been evaluated through an in vivo experiment. Mussels were exposed to a low pH (7.3) under normal dissolved oxygen (DO) conditions (8 mg/L), and hypoxia (2 mg/L) for 8 days, and samples were collected on days 1, 3, 6, and 8 to evaluate dynamic changes of physiological responses.

Drug resistance represents a major limitation to the long-term efficacy of anti-cancer treatments. The commonly accepted view is that the selection of inheritable genetic mechanisms governs the development of secondary resistance. However, compelling evidence suggests an important role for adaptive cell plasticity and non-genetic mechanisms in the development of therapy resistance.

Toxicity of contaminants in organisms under ocean acidification (OA) has attracted increasing attention in ecotoxicological studies. This study investigated how pCO-driven OA affected waterborne copper (Cu) toxicity in antioxidant defences in viscera and gills of Asiatic hard clam Meretrix petechialis (Lamarck, 1818). Clams were continuously exposed to Cu at ambient relevant (0/no metal exposure, 10 and 50 μg L) and polluted-high (100 μg L) concentrations in unacidified (pH 8.
