Objective: To explore feasibility, clinical and imaging outcomes of percutaneous endoscopic interlaminar discectomy (PEID) for single level large lumbar disc herniation(LDH).

Methods: From October 2018 to March 2023, 31 patients with single level LDH treated with PEID were retrospectively analyzed. Among patients, including 18 males and 13 females, aged from 15 to 40 years old with an average of (28.

Rationale: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH) manifests in diverse forms. If the nucleus pulposus or endplate tissues protrudes, the location of annular tears also varies, which poses various challenges for the annular suture technique. Tears at the annular attachment area at the edge of the vertebral body (cephalad or caudad) are considered a prohibitively challenging area for annular suturing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the effects of two bacteria, Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis, on rabbit lumbar discs and how they interact when infecting simultaneously.
  • Researchers injected these bacteria into New Zealand white rabbits and monitored inflammation, weight changes, and disc degeneration over 12 weeks.
  • Results showed that C. acnes led to lumbar disc degeneration, while S. epidermidis caused discitis; when both bacteria were present, the discitis was less severe than with S. epidermidis alone.

A plethora of studies has substantiated the remarkable clinical efficacy of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in the treatment of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. This procedure effectively removes the posterior osteophytes and protruding nucleus pulposus, achieving direct decompression of the spinal cord and effectively alleviating compression symptoms. Concurrently, by distracting the intervertebral space, ACDF contributes to the restoration of the physiological curvature of the cervical spine.

The major symptoms of lumbar disc herniation (LDH) are low back pain, radiative lower extremity pain, and lower limb movement disorder. Patients with LDH suffer from great distress in their daily life accompanied by severe economic hardship and difficulty in self-care, with an increasing tendency in the aging population. PubMed and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for relevant studies of spontaneous resorption or regression in LDH after conservative treatment and for other potential studies, which included those from inception to June 30, 2023.
