In the years 1987-1989 111 patients of SSPE who react positively to laboratory tests were found in Poland. The incidence rate of the disease was in 1987-1.30; in 1980-0.98 and in 1989-0.66 per million inhabitants (in the years 1984-1986 the incidence of SSPE was respectively 1.22; 1.05 and 0.9 per million). The authors observed a shift in the incidence peak of SSPE from the age group 8-9 years in 1977-1983 and 10-12 years in 1984-1986 to the age group 13-14 years in 1987-1989. Among 111 SSPE cases only 6 children (5.4) had been vaccinated against measles while the coverage of measles vaccination in Poland reached over 95%.

Background: Discovering metabolomic markers of dietary potassium may help improve dietary assessment of potassium and trace the impact of dietary potassium on chronic kidney disease (CKD) development.

Methods: We included adults from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study without CKD at visit 1 (N = 3,812). Cross-sectional associations between dietary potassium and serum metabolites were assessed using multivariable linear regression models.

Background: The immune response to infections may become dysregulated and promote myocardial damage contributing to heart failure (HF). We examined the relationship between infection-related hospitalization (IRH) and HF, HF with preserved ejection fraction, and HF with reduced ejection fraction.

Methods And Results: We studied 14 468 adults aged 45 to 64 years in the ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) Study who were HF free at visit 1 (1987-1989).

Background: The association between blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and incident heart failure (HF) in the general population is still unclear.

Methods And Results: We assessed the association of BUN level with incident HF in 14,167 ARIC participants without a history of HF at baseline (1987-1989) (mean age 54.1 years, 54.

25-year trajectories of physical activity and atrial fibrillation risk: results from the ARIC study.

Front Cardiovasc Med

November 2024

National Clinical Research Center for Chinese Medicine Cardiology, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Xiyuan Hospital, Haidian, Beijing, China.

Background: The relationship between serial changes in physical activity and the risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF) has been rarely studied.

Objectives: To evaluate the association between changes in physical activity over time and the incidence of AF.

Methods: A total of 11,828 participants without AF at baseline (visit 1: 1987-1989) from the ARIC Study were included.

Orthostatic and Standing Hypertension and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease.

Hypertension

February 2025

Division of General Medicine, Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA (S.W.D., F.L.K., H.C., R.-A.N.T.-O., L.H.N., J.L.C., K.J.M., L.A.L., M.Z., S.P.J.).

Background: Orthostatic hypertension is an emerging risk factor for adverse events. Recent consensus statements combine an increase in blood pressure upon standing with standing hypertension, but whether these 2 components have similar risk associations with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is unknown.

Methods: The ARIC study (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) measured supine and standing blood pressure during visit 1 (1987-1989).
