ASH2L-Mediated H3K4 Methylation and Nephrogenesis.

Background: Many congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract involve deficits in the number of nephrons, which are associated with a higher risk of hypertension and chronic kidney disease later in life. Prior work has implicated histone modifications in regulating kidney lineage-specific gene transcription and nephron endowment. Our earlier study suggested that ASH2L, a core subunit of the H3K4 methyltransferase complex, plays a role in ureteric bud morphogenesis during mammalian kidney development.

Synthesis of functional enzymes involved in glutathione production during linear motility in boar sperm.

Sperm cells are highly susceptible to oxidative stress, which decreases their motility and fertility. However, glutathione (GSH) plays a critical role in protecting sperm cells from oxidative damage, a common byproduct of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. On the other hand, GSH biosynthesis in sperm is limited by the availability of cysteine (Cys), which is inherently unstable and found at low concentrations in boar seminal plasma.

Expression of the compact mitochondrial genome is regulated by nuclear encoded, mitochondrially localized RNA-binding proteins (RBPs). RBPs regulate the lifecycles of mitochondrial RNAs from transcription to degradation by mediating RNA processing, maturation, stability and translation. The Fas-activated serine/threonine kinase (FASTK) family of RBPs has been shown to regulate and fine-tune discrete aspects of mitochondrial gene expression.

The green peach aphid () is a generalist pest damaging crops and transmitting viral pathogens. Using Illumina sequencing of small (s)RNAs and poly(A)-enriched long RNAs, we analyzed aphid virome components, viral gene expression and antiviral RNA interference (RNAi) responses. Myzus persicae densovirus (family ), a single-stranded (ss)DNA virus persisting in the aphid population, produced 22 nucleotide sRNAs from both strands of the entire genome, including 5'- and 3'-inverted terminal repeats.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of noncoding RNAs that lack the 5'-cap structure and the 3' poly(A) tail. Their distinguishing feature is that the 3' and 5' ends are covalently linked to form a closed circular structure. CircRNAs have a longer half-life and stronger ribonuclease resistance compared with linear RNA.
