The assessment of biological activities of imidacloprid and its two major metabolites, namely 6-chloronicotinic acid and 2-imidazolidone for nontarget organism, by employing essentially functional biomacromolecules, albumin and hemoglobin as a potentially model with the use of circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence, extrinsic 8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid (ANS) fluorescence as well as molecular modeling is the theme of this work. By dint of CD spectra and synchronous fluorescence, it was clear that the orderly weak interactions between amino acid residues within globular proteins were disturbed by imidacloprid, and this event led to marginally alterations or self-regulations of protein conformation so as to lodge imidacloprid more tightly. Both steady state and time-resolved fluorescence suggested that the fluorescence of Trp residues in proteins was quenched after the presence of imidacloprid, corresponding to noncovalent protein-imidacloprid complexes formation and, the reaction belongs to moderate association (K=1.

Background: Among adenosine receptors (ARs) the A2B subtype exhibits low affinity for the endogenous agonist compared with the A1, A2A, and A3 subtypes and is therefore activated when concentrations of adenosine increase to a large extent following tissue damages (e.g. ischemia, inflammation).

Supramolecular elastomer based on polydimethylsiloxanes (SESi) is a kind of novel elastomer cross-linked by the multihydrogen bonds supplied by the functional groups linked to the end of the PDMS chains, such as amide, imidazolidone, pending urea (1,1-dialkyl urea), and bridging urea (1,3-dialkyl urea). SESi showed lower glass transition temperature (T g) at about -113 °C because of the softer chain of PDMS, and could show real rubber-like elastic behaviors and acceptable water vapor transmission rate under room temperature. The high biocompatibility of SESi in the form of films was demonstrated by the cytotoxicity evaluation (MTT cytotoxicity assay and direct contact assay), hemolysis assay, and skin irritation evaluation.

Glutamate, the principal excitatory neurotransmitter of the brain, participates in a multitude of physiologic and pathologic processes, including learning and memory. Glutathione, a tripeptide composed of the amino acids glutamate, cysteine, and glycine, serves important cofactor roles in antioxidant defense and drug detoxification, but glutathione deficits occur in multiple neuropsychiatric disorders. Glutathione synthesis and metabolism are governed by a cycle of enzymes, the γ-glutamyl cycle, which can achieve intracellular glutathione concentrations of 1-10mM.

A procedure to prepare and purify adducts of formaldehyde (FA) to the N-terminus of peptides was developed. FA-VHLTPEEK and FA-VLSPADK were produced with purities >95% upon incubation of the peptides with FA in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at a pH level of 7.4.
