The solute-binding protein (SBP) components of periplasmic binding protein-dependent ATP-binding cassette (ABC)-type transporters often possess exquisite selectivity for their cognate ligands. Maltose binding protein (MBP), the best studied of these SBPs, has been extensively used as a fusion partner to enable the affinity purification of recombinant proteins. Nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit great potential to improve various properties of viscoelastic surfactant (VES) fracturing fluids in the development of low-permeability reservoirs. In the present study, the amphiphilic Janus NPs (JANPs) were fabricated via the Pickering emulsion method and employed to construct the novel JA12C (JANPs with dodecyl hydrophobic carbon chains)-assisted VES fracturing fluid (JAVES). The successful fabrication of JANPs was confirmed via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements and water contact angle tests.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the postoperative outcomes and patient-surveyed scar assessments of single-port laparoscopic appendectomy (SPLA) with the outcomes of multiport laparoscopic appendectomy (MPLA).

Methods: Between August 2014 and November 2017, the prospective randomized study comprised 98 patients diagnosed with acute appendicitis and indicated for surgery. Fifty-one patients had MPLA and 47 patients received SPLA.

As the herbicide acetochlor (ACT) affects the plankton food web, this study investigated the effects of ACT and exocrine infochemicals from daphnids (after ACT exposure and/or starvation) on Scenedesmus obliquus growth, as well as the effects of ACT and starvation on life-history traits of Daphnia magna. Filtered secretions from daphnids increased algal ACT tolerance, dependent on different ACT exposure histories and food intake. Endogenous and secretory metabolite profiles of daphnids following ACT and/or starvation appear to be regulated by the fatty acid synthesis pathway and sulfotransferases and were related to energy allocation trade-offs.
