Background: Serological evidence for influenza A, subtype H1 and H3 virus infections of bovines, associated with respiratory disease and decreased milk production, has been reported. Equine H3N8 influenza virus circulates widely and was responsible for the introduction of H3N8 influenza into canines.
Objective: To explore the possibility that equine H3N8 influenza might also infect bovines.
Methods: To assess the incidence of seroconversion in the field, a retrospective survey of bovine serum samples was carried out. Also, primary cultures of bovine nasal turbinate cells, and live beef calves, were studied for their permissiveness to infection.
Results And Conclusions: We found serological evidence of exposure of bovines in Kentucky to H3 influenza. We demonstrate that cultured bovine respiratory epithelium is permissive for the growth of equine H3N8 influenza virus in vitro, but this virus does not replicate extensively or produce disease in experimentally inoculated cattle.

The H3 subtype of avian influenza virus (AIV) stands out as one of the most prevalent subtypes, posing a significant threat to public health. In this study, a novel triple-reassortant H3N3 AIV designated A/chicken/China/16/2023 (H3N3), was isolated from a sick chicken in northern China. The complete genome of the isolate was determined using next-generation sequencing, and the AIV-like particles were confirmed via transmission electron microscopy.

Development of an efficacious universal influenza vaccines remains a long-sought goal. Current vaccines have shortfalls such as mid/low efficacy and needing yearly strain revisions to account for viral drift/shift. Horses undergo bi-annual vaccines for the H3N8 equine influenza virus, and surveillance of sera from vaccinees demonstrated very broad reactivity and neutralization to many influenza strains.

Objective: To describe the clinical presentation and diagnosis of bilateral diaphragmatic paralysis in a weanling miniature donkey jack.
Case Summary: A 5-month-old miniature donkey jack presented to a tertiary care facility for fever, cough, and increased respiratory rate and effort initially unresponsive to treatment with antimicrobials and anti-inflammatories. Clinical and diagnostic evaluations found no evidence of upper respiratory obstruction or bacterial pneumonia.
