Data envelopment analysis (DEA) techniques have been applied to the assessing efficiency and productivity among individual hospitals. In this article, we employ DEA to address whether economies of scale exist among hospital markets by first assessing individual hospitals operating in 2005 in the State of Florida and then by comparing hospital markets' efficiency relative to each other. The interest in hospital markets stems from issues relating to mergers among hospitals or the reallocation of services (inputs) among hospitals in a market area, particularly as occupancy rates and reimbursements are tending to fall. Facing more competition and stringent financial conditions, hospitals would benefit from decreasing costs by exploiting economies of scale.

[F]FDG PET/CT for predicting neoadjuvant PD-L1 blockade monotherapy treatment response in patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma: a preliminary study.

Eur J Nucl Med Mol Imaging

January 2025

Department of Nuclear Medicine, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, No. 180 in Fenglin Road, Shanghai, 200032, P.R. China.

Purpose: To investigate the predictive value of 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ([F]FDG) PET/CT for evaluating primary tumor (PT) and lymph node (LN) responses after neoadjuvant programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) blockade monotherapy in patients with locally advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (LA-ESCC).

Methods: In the single-arm phase 1b NATION-1907 trial (NCT04215471), 23 patients with LA-ESCC received two cycles of neoadjuvant PD-L1 blockade Adebrelimab followed by surgery. Among these, 18 patients underwent [F]FDG PET/CT scans both before immunotherapy and prior to surgery.

Technical, economic, and environmental assessment of CO₂ ship transport in carbon capture and storage.

J Environ Manage

December 2024

Professor of Geochemistry, School of Ocean & Earth Science, National Oceanography Centre Southampton and Director of the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute, University of Southampton, United Kingdom. Electronic address:

CO shipping is integral to expediting the implementation Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) initiatives within the United Kingdom. This study introduces a framework, encompassing techno-economic and environmental aspects, evaluating the maritime transportation of approximately 5.9 million tons of CO annually from the Solent region, equivalent to removing around 1.

Bioelectrochemically improved anaerobic digestion (AD-BES) represents an upgrading strategy for existing biogas plants, consisting of the integration of bioelectrodes within the AD reactor. For this study, a series of laboratory-scale AD-BES reactors were operated, valorising agricultural digestates through the production of biogas. The reactors were inoculated and started-up with three different digestates, leading to significant differences in the microbial community developed on the bioelectrodes.

Large scale production of insect larvae is considered a sustainable way to upcycle various organic waste- and by-products into more valuable food and feed products. The sustainability of insect larvae production depends on the substrates and species being used, but comparative studies that include both growth and efficiency are lacking. Here we compare larval fitness, including survival, development time, weight, substrate conversion efficiency, substrate reduction, and metabolic parameters across different combinations of densities and waste- and by-product-based substrates on the two fly species, the house fly (Musca domestica) and the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens).
