Kynurenine is a small molecule derived from tryptophan when this amino acid is metabolised via the kynurenine pathway. The biological activity of kynurenine and its metabolites (kynurenines) is well recognised. Therefore, understanding the regulation of the subsequent biochemical reactions is essential for the design of therapeutic strategies which aim to interfere with the kynurenine pathway. However, kynurenine concentration in the body may not only be determined by the efficiency of kynurenine synthesis but also by the rate of kynurenine clearance. In this review, current knowledge about the mechanisms of kynurenine production and routes of its clearance is presented. In addition, the involvement of kynurenine and its metabolites in the biology of different T cell subsets (including Th17 cells and regulatory T cells) and neuronal cells is discussed.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is one of the most common conditions affecting felines, yet the metabolic alterations underlying its pathophysiology remain poorly understood, hindering progress in identifying biomarkers and therapeutic targets. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive view of metabolic changes in feline CKD across conserved biochemical pathways and evaluate their progression throughout the disease continuum. Using a multi-biomatrix high-throughput metabolomics approach, serum and urine samples from CKD-affected cats ( = 94) and healthy controls ( = 84) were analyzed with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Citronellol is widely utilized in consumer products, including cosmetics, fragrances, and household items. However, despite being considered a relatively safe chemical, the health effects and toxicity mechanisms associated with exposure to high concentrations of citronellol, based on product content, remain inadequately understood. Here, we aimed to analyze the neurological effects of citronellol in zebrafish larvae using behavioral and histological analyses and elucidate the mechanisms underlying its neurotoxicity in vivo.

Heat stress (HS) is an impactful condition in ruminants that negatively affects their physiological and rumen microbial composition. However, a fundamental understanding of metabolomic and metataxonomic mechanisms in goats under HS conditions is lacking. Here, we analyzed the rumen metabolomics, metataxonomics, and serum metabolomics of goats (n = 10, body weight: 41.

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has spurred an extraordinary scientific effort to better understand the disease's pathophysiology and develop diagnostic and prognostic tools to guide more precise and effective clinical management. Among the biological samples analyzed for biomarker identification, urine stands out due to its low risk of infection, non-invasive collection, and suitability for frequent, large-volume sampling. Integrating data from omics studies with standard biochemical analyses offers a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of COVID-19.
