Ramsey, Spirtes and Glymour (RSG) critique a method proposed by Neumann et al. (2010) for the discovery of functional networks from fMRI meta-analysis data. We concur with this critique, but are unconvinced that directed graphical models (DGMs) are generally useful for estimating causal effects. We express our reservations using the "potential outcomes" framework for causal inference widely used in statistics.

In this article, we proposed a new method named fused mixed graphical model (FMGM), which can infer network structures associated with dichotomous phenotypes. FMGM is based on a pairwise Markov random field model, and statistical analyses including the proposed method were conducted to find biological markers and underlying network structures of the atopic dermatitis (AD) from multiomics data of 6-month-old infants. The performance of FMGM was evaluated with simulations by using synthetic datasets of power-law networks, showing that FMGM had superior performance for identifying the differences of the networks compared to the separate inference with the previous method, causalMGM (F1-scores 0.

Survival analysis often involves modeling hazard functions while considering frailty to account for unobserved cluster-level factors in clustered survival data. Shared frailty models have gained popularity for this purpose, but assessing covariate functional form in these models presents unique challenges. Martingale and deviance residuals are commonly used for visually assessing covariate functional form against continuous covariates.

Ecological assembly-the process of ecological community formation through species introductions-has recently seen exciting theoretical advancements across dynamical, informational, and probabilistic approaches. However, these theories often remain inaccessible to non-theoreticians, and they lack a unifying lens. Here, I introduce the assembly graph as an integrative tool to connect these emerging theories.

In infectious disease outbreak modeling, there remains a gap in addressing spatiotemporal challenges present in established models. This study addresses this gap by evaluating four established hybrid neural network models for predicting influenza outbreaks. These models were analyzed by employing time series data from eight different countries to challenge the models with imposed spatial difficulties, in a month-on-month structure.

There has been much controversy regarding the order in which cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) and systemic therapy (ST) are applied for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). We aimed to investigate the role of deferred CN (dCN) in mRCC, particularly in the current era of immunotherapy. A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, and Scopus for studies comparing dCN versus any non-dCN strategy, in any temporal sequence, with the provision of Kaplan-Meier curves for overall survival (OS).
