Objectives: To define the epidemiological impact of the overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) on sexual life. We therefore analyzed this issue in a large cohort of individuals participating in a health screening project.

Patients And Methods: A total of 2,365 men and women completed the Bristol Female Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms Questionnaire (BFLUTS). OAB was defined according to the International Continence Society (ICS). The impact of OAB on sexual life was assessed by a single question: 'In general, how do your micturition problems affect your sexual life'.

Results: A total of 1.199 men and 1.166 women with were analyzed. The overall prevalence of OAB was 13.9% (n = 329): 9.7% had OAB(dry) and 4.2% OAB(wet). A total of 17.6% (n = 58) of individuals with OAB reported a negative impact of OAB on sexual life as compared to 4.7% of those without OAB (p < 0.001). One of 4 with OAB(wet) reported a negative impact on sexual life (25%) as compared to 14.4% in those with OAB(dry) (p < 0.005).

Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction is frequently reported in individuals with OAB. Individuals with OAB(wet) are experiencing a more profound impact on sexuality. Therefore, patients with OAB should be assessed regarding sexual dysfunction by the urologist.

The balance between mating benefits and costs shapes reproductive strategies and life history traits across animal species. For biological control programs, understanding how mating rates influence life history traits is essential for optimising population management and enhancing predator efficacy. This study investigates the impact of mating opportunity availability, delayed mating, and male mating history (copulation frequency) on the lifespan (both sexes), female reproductive traits (duration of oviposition and of pre- and post-oviposition periods, and lifetime oviposition), and offspring quality (egg size and offspring survival) of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot (Acari: Phytoseiidae), an important biological control agent against spider mites.

Aging women in Russia: Between sexless and sexy oldies.

J Women Aging

January 2025

Department of Sociology, European University at St. Petersburg, St Petersburg, Russia.

Women's sexuality as a dimension of embodied identity is shaped and constrained by social norms of gender and age and negotiated by women in complex ways. Discourses of hegemonic bodily normativity ascribe a sexless subjectivity to Russian women in their post-reproductive years, contributing to their social exclusion. At the same time, in modern Russian society a neoliberal concept of "successful active aging" is gradually changing understandings of aging, making later-life sexuality more visible and legitimate.

Evolutionary changes in development and/or host number of parasite life cycles can have subsequent ecological and evolutionary consequences for parasites. One theoretical model based on the mating systems of hermaphroditic parasites assumes a life cycle with fewer hosts will result in more inbreeding, and predicts a truncated life cycle most likely evolves in the absence of inbreeding depression. Many populations of the hermaphroditic trematode Alloglossidium progeneticum maintain an ancestral obligate 3-host life cycle where obligate sexual reproduction occurs among adults in catfish third hosts.

Maynard Smith's proposed two-fold cost of sex states that one of the disadvantages of clonal reproduction is the decreased ability to persist in dynamic ecosystems. However, the long-term persistence of some clonal alloploid lineages suggests that these lineages may not always be so ephemeral in nature. Understanding the stability of these lineages over time can inform our understanding of the advantages of an asexual mode of life.

Severe ARDS due to disseminated toxoplasmosis in a person with HIV successfully treated with ECMO: a case report.

Front Med (Lausanne)

January 2025

Department of Infectious Diseases, Bellvitge University Hospital, Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), University of Barcelona, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

Disseminated toxoplasmosis (DT) is an uncommon but severe complication associated with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). This case report describes the successful treatment of a 28-year-old male individual with AIDS who developed severe and life-threatening acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) resulting from DT, in which extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was employed effectively.
