Electrode graphite powder beds were interposed between anode and cathode as intermediate electrodes inside an electrolytic setup. Due to electrostatic shielding they eliminate the applied electric field and therefore stop the electromigration of ions within their mass. It was found that the intermediate electrodes can act as ionic current sinks-ion concentrating compartments and therefore cause a new type of a membrane-less electrodialysis/electrodeionization process. The proposed electrostatic shielding based coupled electrodialysis/electrodeionization treatment of synthetic cobalt plating rinse water containing 300 mg L(-1) Co(2 + ) ions produced a low-volume Co(2 + ) concentrate which could be recycled to the electroplating bath for reuse and a diluate containing 43.8 mg L(-1) Co(2 + ) ions. The diluate was then used as feed in the subsequent electrostatic shielding electrodeionization process which produced pure water with a cobalt ion concentration less than 0.1 mg L(-1). The current efficiency was 22-29%, the enrichment factor 13.5-26.1, the current density 20-40 A m(-2) and the flow rate 1.54 × 10(-4)-4.06 × 10(-4) dm(3) s(-1). The proposed membrane free electrostatic shielding electrodialysis/electrodeionization process could be developed into a new alternative electrochemical method of cobalt or other heavy metal removal and water purification and recycling from industrial effluents laden with heavy metals.

One of the biggest challenges in food packaging is the creation of sustainable and eco-friendly packaging materials to shield foods from ultraviolet (UV) photochemical damage and to preserve the distinctive physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of foods throughout the supply chain. Accordingly, this study focuses on enhancing the UV shielding properties and biological activity of carboxylmethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) through modifications using zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO), and graphene oxide (GO) using the solution casting technique. The hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and x-ray diffraction (XRD).

This study explores the interactions of the -[Ru(phen)(Apy)] complex (RuApy, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, Apy = 3,4-aminopyridine) with model lipid membranes to explain the role this complex plays in mitigating Aβ toxicity in PC12 neuronal cells. Fluorescence quenching, surface pressure isotherms in Langmuir monolayers, and infrared reflection-absorption analyses revealed that the positively charged RuApy interacts with the phosphate headgroups of monolayers, indirectly affecting ester carbonyl groups through hydrogen bonding with the amino group of the pyridine ligand of RuApy. These results offer a scenario for the protective effect of RuApy against Aβ toxicity in neuronal cells in which these interactions shield the electrostatic interactions of Aβ with lipid membranes, preserving membrane integrity and mitigating the deleterious influence of Aβ.

The evolution of production and lifestyle patterns has led to an increasing demand for multifunctional packaging materials that exceed the capabilities of traditional single-function options, thus driving continuous innovation in the field. In this study, a novel approach is presented, where camellia seed cake protein, derived from camellia seed oil production by-products, is incorporated into sodium alginate to create biobased active packaging films. The antioxidant and UV-shielding properties of the sodium alginate-camellia seed cake protein films are enhanced by the incorporation of camellia seed cake protein.

Collaboration of cancerous cells and microenvironment is the root for tumor spreading, leading to difficulty in complete metastasis blockage via mono-intervention. Herein, a triple-responsive nanoassembly is designed for orienting tumor cells and migration-driving M2 tumor associated macrophages (TAMs) in microenvironment for efficient anti-metastatic therapy. Structurally, a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive crosslinked short-chain polyquaternium is synthesized to bridge graphene oxide (GO) scaffold with apolipoprotein A-I crown via borate-crosslinking, electrostatic adherence, and coordinative coupling.
