Periodate modification of the sugar moiety in sugars, including adenosine triphosphate (ATP), has previously been employed in order to prepare dialdehyde-type reagents, which were then utilized in crosslinking reactions on haemoglobin, yielding polymerized material with useful dioxygen-binding properties and hence proposed as possible artificial oxygen carriers ('blood substitutes'). Here, the periodate protocol is shown to be applicable to a wider range of oxygen-containing compounds, illustrated by starch and polyethylene glycol. Derivatization protocols are described for haemoglobin with such periodate-treated crosslinking agents, and the dioxygen-binding properties and redox reactivities are investigated for the derivatized haemoglobins, with emphasis on pro-oxidative properties. There is a general tendency of the derivatization to result in higher autooxidation rates. The peroxide reactivity of the met (ferric) form is also affected by derivatization, as witnessed, among others, by varying yields of ferryl [Fe (IV)-oxo] and free radical generated. In cell, culture tests (human umbilical vein epithelial cells, HUVEC), the derivatization protocols show no toxic effect.

Due to the wide range of applications of band-gap engineering in optoelectronics and photocatalysis, the rational design of polyoxometalate (POM) frameworks is highly desired. Here, we have successfully synthesized a series of mixed addenda (Mo and W) sandwich POMs by systematically varying pH, concentrations of salts, and counterions in Weakley-type sandwich POMs by incorporating Mo into the framework of tetrasubstituted sandwich POMs. Crystallographic analysis reveals the centrosymmetric structure; with variation in the Mo to W ratio, Mo preferentially binds to μ oxygen connected to transition metals in the sandwich position.

The physico- and electrochemical behaviors of a series of [WZn(HO)(ZnWO)] (Zn-WZn) and its first-row transition-metal-substituted analogues [WZn(TM)(HO)(ZnWO)] (Zn-WZn(TM); TM = Mn, Co, Fe, Ni and Cu) are reported. Various spectroscopic studies, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, electrospray ionization (ESI)-mass spectrometry, and Raman spectroscopy, show similar spectral patterns in all sandwich polyoxometalates (POMs) because of their isostructural geometry and constancy of the overall negative charge (-12). However, the electronic properties highly depend on the transition metals at the "sandwich core" and correlate well with the density functional theory (DFT) study.

Herein, we examine the electronic and geometric structural properties of O-derived aliphatic thiolate-ligated Fe-peroxo, Fe-hydroxo, and Fe(IV) oxo compounds. The latter cleaves strong C-H bonds (96 kcal mol) on par with the valine C-H bond cleaved by isopencillin N synthase (IPNS). Stopped-flow kinetics studies indicate that the barrier to O binding to [Fe(SN(tren))] () is extremely low ( = 36(2) kJ mol), as theoretically predicted for IPNS.

Oxidative C-C bond cleavage of 2-aminophenols mediated by transition metals and dioxygen is a topic of great interest. While the oxygenolytic C-C bond cleavage reaction relies on the inherent redox non-innocent property of 2-aminophenols, the metal complexes of 2-aminophenolates often undergo 1e-/2e- oxidation events (metal or ligand oxidation), instead of the direct addition of O2 for subsequent C-C bond cleavage. In this work, we report the isolation, characterization and dioxygen reactivity of a series of ternary iron(ii)-2-aminophenolate complexes [(TpPh,Me)FeII(X)], where X = 2-amino-4-tert-butylphenolate (4-tBu-HAP) (1); X = 2-amino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate (4,6-di-tBu-HAP) (2); X = 2-amino-4-nitrophenolate (4-NO2-HAP)(3); and X = 2-anilino-4,6-di-tert-butylphenolate (NH-Ph-4,6-di-tBu-HAP) (4) supported by a facial tridentate nitrogen donor ligand (TpPh,Me = hydrotris(3-phenyl-5-methylpyrazol-1-yl)borate).

Herein we quantitatively investigate how metal ion Lewis acidity and steric properties influence the kinetics and thermodynamics of dioxygen binding versus release from structurally analogous Mn-O complexes, as well as the barrier to Mn peroxo O-O bond cleavage, and the reactivity of Mn oxo intermediates. Previously we demonstrated that the steric and electronic properties of Mn-OOR complexes containing N-heterocyclic (N) ligand scaffolds can have a dramatic influence on alkylperoxo O-O bond lengths and the barrier to alkylperoxo O-O bond cleavage. Herein, we examine the dioxygen reactivity of a new Mn complex containing a more electron-rich, less sterically demanding N ligand scaffold, and compare it with previously reported Mn complexes.
