The miscibility, mechanical and morphological properties of mixed Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers prepared from the phospholipid 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine and the perfluorinated fatty acid perfluorooctadecanoic acid have been studied as a function of film composition and subphase salinity. It was demonstrated here, for the first time, that the extent of surfactant miscibility in mixed phospholipid-perfluoroacid monolayers, and hence the resulting mechanical properties of the monolayer film, can be controlled by altering the concentration of sodium ions in the underlying subphase. Elevated Na(+) concentrations resulted in lower net attractive interactions between film components, likely through specific ion adsorption to the negatively-charged perfluoroacid, along with decreased film elasticities. These results differ significantly from conventional fatty-acid-carboxylate monolayer systems in which film cohesion is typically enhanced through adsorption of cations to surfactant headgroups. Atomic force microscope images of films deposited onto solid mica substrates revealed that the films deposited from pure water formed multimolecular aggregates of surfactant, which could be attributed to the highly cohesive nature of the films, but the use of salt in the subphase diminished aggregate formation and resulted in the production of homogeneous monolayer films.

Mini-emulsion and nanoprecipitation techniques relied on large amounts of surfactants, and unresolved miscibility issues of heterojunction materials limited their efficiency and applicability in the past. Through our molecular design and developed surfactant-free precipitation method, we successfully fabricated the best miscible bulk-heterojunction-particles (BHJP) ever achieved, using donor () and acceptor () polymers. The structural similarity ensures optimal miscibility, as supported by the interaction parameter of the / blend is positioned very close to the binodal curve.

Drug-polymer interactions and miscibility promote the formation and performance of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) of poorly soluble drugs for improved oral bioavailability. The objective of this study was to employ drug-polymer interaction calculations and small-scale experimental characterization to screen polymers for potential ASDs of ritonavir. Seven polymers across four polymer types were screened as follows: an enteric one (EudragitS100), amphiphilic ones (HPMCAS-L, HPMCAS-H, and their 1:1 combination), hydrophilic ones (PEG-6000, PVP-VA), and a surfactant (Soluplus), including PVP-VA as a positive control, as the commercial ASD employs PVP-VA.

The occurrence of the Marangoni phenomenon is due to the surface tension gradient within a system, resulting in the creation of a convective flow from low surface tension to high surface tension points. This phenomenon arises from changes in solvent concentration, temperature and electric charge. In the context of the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process, changing solvent concentration at the interface of two fluids in matrix fracturing systems caused by gas injection (in immiscible, immiscible and near-miscible conditions) and surfactant flooding, can enhance oil recovery by increasing the Marangoni effect.

This research focuses on exploring the solid solubility and miscibility of Etoricoxib, a poorly water-soluble anti-inflammatory drug, within Soluplus®, a polymer used as a matrix for 3D-printed tablets. By utilizing hot-melt extrusion (HME), the drug was dispersed within Soluplus® to enhance its solubility. The extrudates were then employed in 3D printing to create customized solid oral dosage form.

Ternary amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) consist of a multicomponent carrier with the aim of improving physical stability or dissolution performance. A polymer blend as a carrier that combines a water-insoluble and a water-soluble polymer may delay the drug release rate, minimizing the risk of precipitation from the supersaturated state. Different microstructures of the ternary ASD may result in different drug release performances; hence, understanding the phase morphology of the polymer blend is crucial prior to drug incorporation.
