Background: Neutrophil Extracellular Traps can contribute to thrombosis via stabilization fibrin network, which is normally conducted by plasma transglutaminase, Factor XIII-A as part of coagulation cascade. The possible presence and activity of FXIII-A in neutrophils or during NETosis is unknown. Here, we investigated potential presence of FXIII-A in neutrophils and participation in NET-fibrinogen interaction.

Cytokine signalling in formation of neutrophil extracellular traps: Implications for health and diseases.

Cytokine Growth Factor Rev

December 2024

Department of Ageing Research, Manipal School of Life Sciences, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka 576104, India. Electronic address:

Neutrophils, as essential component of the innate immune response, form a crucial part in the defence mechanisms through the release of extracellular traps (NETs). These web-like structures, composed of chromatin and antimicrobial proteins, are essential for the entrapment and inactivation of pathogens. However, either constitutive formation or inefficient clearance of NETs leads to adverse effects such as fibrosis, thrombosis, delayed wound healing and tissue damage in multiple diseases associated with sterile inflammation.

Fibrinolysis influences the mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells from their bone marrow microenvironment (BMM). Here we show that activation of plasmin, a key fibrinolytic agent, by annexin A2 (ANXA2) distinctly impacts progression of BCR-ABL1 B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) via modulation of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the BMM. The dense ECM in a BMM with decreased plasmin activity entraps insulin-like growth factor (IGF) 1 and reduces mTORC2-dependent signaling and proliferation of B-ALL cells.

Article Synopsis
  • A descriptive study was conducted using an automated microfoam preparation system (AMPS) for foam sclerotherapy in treating varicose veins, involving 185 patients from February 2021 to December 2022.
  • The average treatment involved different volumes and concentrations of foam for various types of veins, with high occlusion rates reported after 15 months, particularly for the great and small saphenous veins.
  • The study found a low complication rate overall, indicating that the AMPS could be a versatile and effective option for treating venous diseases while minimizing adverse events.

Mimickers of nervous system involvement among patients with Behçet's syndrome.

J Neurol

October 2024

School of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Rheumatology, Istanbul University-Cerrahpasa, Istanbul, Turkey.

Objectives: We aimed to identify conditions mimicking nervous system involvement among patients with Behçet's syndrome (BS) and to determine clinical, laboratory and imaging findings that may help in the differential diagnosis.

Methods: We screened the charts of 500 consecutive BS patients to identify those who were referred to neurology at any time during their follow-up. The final diagnoses, presenting signs and symptoms, laboratory and imaging results were retrieved from patient charts.
