Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Bovis calculus (BC) has a medicinal history of over 2,000 years in treating stroke in China. Bovis Culus Sativus (BCS) has similar pharmacological effects to BC. Due to the scarcity of BC, BCS is often used as a substitute for BC in clinical practice for treating stroke in traditional Chinese medicine.

Atherosclerosis involves stiffening of the arteries due to the accumulation of lipids and oxidized lipids on the blood vessel walls, triggering the development of artery plaque. The vagus nerve is proposed to enable communication between the gut microbiome and the brain, but activity-based evidence is lacking. We find that mice reared germ-free exhibit decreased vagal tone relative to colonized controls, which is reversed via microbiota restoration. Perfusing antibiotics into the small intestines of conventional mice, but not germ-free mice, acutely decreases vagal activity which is restored upon re-perfusion with intestinal filtrates from conventional, but not germ-free, mice.
