Diffuse cylindrical bronchiectasis due to eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy in a dog.

Published: July 2010

A miniature pinscher-cross was evaluated for chronic coughing. Computed tomography and bronchoscopy revealed severe, diffuse, cylindrical bronchiectasis secondary to eosinophilic bronchopneumopathy. Computed tomography is the gold standard for diagnosis of bronchiectasis in humans, and should be further investigated in dogs as a means of characterizing severity and pattern of disease.

Visualization study of the effects of polycarboxylates on CO hydrate generation and interfacial property.

Marine carbon sequestration, with its high potential and low risk of leakage, is an attractive technology for effectively addressing global climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A current concern about marine sequestration lies in the potential negative effects of the carbon sequestration process on the marine environment. CO hydrate sequestration is considered to be one of the most stable method of sequestration, and researchers are actively searching for promoters that facilitate hydrate sequestration and are friendly to the marine environment.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explored how moisture movement and drying-related shrinkage in concrete can lead to tiny cracks that affect diffuse ultrasound measurements.
  • Researchers conducted long-term experiments involving multiple drying and rewetting cycles to track changes in the concrete's mass and ultrasonic properties.
  • Findings showed that parameters like diffusivity and dissipation changed significantly during drying and wetting, but did not fully return to original levels when saturated, suggesting that drying can cause micro-cracks that impact ultrasound reliability in changing environments.

Liquid diffusion coefficients are usually concentration-dependent (D(C)), and current methods for measuring the D(C) relationship suffer from long measurement times and large repetitive experimental workloads. This paper consequently proposes a new method for rapid measurement of D(C), which can eliminate the need to measure uncalibrated diffusion coefficients corresponding to concentration by comparing the theoretical concentration distribution of diffusion solution obtained by the finite element method and the experimental concentration distribution. The core diffusion and imaging setup is a compound liquid-core cylindrical lens, which can offer the advantages of high refractive index resolution and imaging quality, guaranteeing the accurate measurement concentration distribution.

Article Synopsis
  • APECED is a rare genetic syndrome characterized by autoimmune issues that can affect multiple systems, including the lungs, and is particularly prevalent in the Sardinian population.
  • A 49-year-old Sardinian woman with APECED presented to a bronchiectasis clinic with chronic respiratory issues, and her CT scan revealed significant bronchiectasis along with infections from P. aeruginosa, MRSA, and M. intracellulare.
  • This case marks the first known lung involvement in a Sardinian APECED patient, highlighting the need for increased awareness and earlier screening for pulmonary complications in similar patients.

Near-Infinite-Chain Polymers with Ge=Ge Double Bonds.

Despite considerable interest in heteroatom-containing conjugated polymers, there are only few examples with heavier p-block elements in the conjugation path. The recently reported heavier acyclic diene metathesis (HADMET) allowed for the synthesis of a polymer containing Ge=Ge double bonds-albeit insoluble and with limited degree of polymerization. By incorporation of long alkyl chains, we now obtained soluble representatives, which exhibit degrees of polymerization near infinity according to diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and dynamic light scattering (DLS).
