Live bacterial vectors may be useful tools for the development of novel cancer therapies that can be added to the repertoire of existing drugs. Several bacterial strains effectively colonize solid tumors and act as antitumor therapeutics. The naturally occurring tumor-colonizing characteristics of bacterial species such as Salmonella sp, Clostridium sp and Escherichia coli can be further modified by genetic manipulations, making these bacterial systems excellent vehicles for the production and targeted delivery of therapeutic molecules into cancer cells. This feature review summarizes recent research on cancer therapy using genetically modified bacteria. Different approaches - bactofection, DNA vaccination, and bacterially mediated protein and RNAi delivery - in which modified bacteria are used as anticancer therapeutics, are discussed.

Many human infections are transmitted through contact with household pets. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the occurrence of ticks and fleas on pets (dogs and cats) in local veterinary clinics in Statesboro, Georgia. We screened ectoparasites for Rickettsia and Bartonella and assessed owner knowledge and practices related to tick- and flea-borne diseases.

Unlabelled: Genetically engineered bacteria represent a promising drug delivery tool for disease treatment. The development of new strategies for specific and independent protein regulation is necessary, especially for combination protein drug therapy. Using the well-studied phage λ as a model system, we applied onanonical mino cid (ncAAs) as novel inducers for protein regulation in a bacteria-based delivery system.

Unlabelled: Insertion sequences (ISs) are key components of most bacterial genomes and play a crucial role in bacterial mutagenesis. In this study, we observed the insertion of an IS element, ISLrh, from the M1 genome into plasmid pGK12, resulting in the generation of a new plasmid, pTRK829. This insertion enabled pTRK829 to replicate in hosts previously incompatible with pGK12, including M1, GG (LGG), ATCC 393, and ATCC 25598.

Background: In conjunction with more sensitive culture and molecular diagnostic testing modalities, simultaneous or sequential infection with more than 1 vector borne zoonotic pathogen is being increasingly documented in human patients. On a frequent basis, many people are exposed to apparently healthy, but infected, domestic and wild animals, the arthropod vectors with which these animals have co-evolved, and the bacterial, protozoal and other pathogens for which various animals are reservoirs. Unsuspected zoonotic transmission by scratch, bite, or vector exposures can result in chronic, indolent, or potentially life-threatening infections.
