In this work, a new 2-(2-oxoethyl)hydrazine carbothioamide modified silica gel (SG-OHC) sorbent was prepared and applied for preconcentration of trace mercury(II) prior to the measurement by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The optimization of some analytical parameters affecting the adsorption of the analyte such as acidity, shaking time, sample flow rate and volume, eluent condition, and interfering substances were investigated. At pH 3, the maximum static adsorption capacity of Hg(II) onto the SG-OHC was 37.5 mg g(-1). The quantitative recovery (>95%) of Hg(II) could be obtained using 2 mL of 0.5 mol L(-1)HCl and 1% CS(NH(2))(2) solution as eluent. Common coexisting substances did not interfere with the separation of mercury(II) under optimal conditions. The detection limit of present method was 0.10 ng mL(-1), and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was lower than 4.0% (n=8). The prepared sorbent was successfully applied for the preconcentration of trace Hg(II) in certified and water samples with satisfactory results.

Developing Ag-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensors for detecting Hg(II) has garnered significant research interest due to their unparalleled selectivity, which is brought by the specific Ag-Hg amalgamation reaction. However, existing sensors perform unsatisfactorily in the trace detection of Hg(II) because the low concentration of Hg(II) does not have the redox potential sufficient to amalgamate with Ag. To address this challenge, a plasmonic MOF SERS sensor is developed, nanoetched Ag@UiO-68-SMe, by integrating the enormous Raman enhancement effects of nanoetched Ag with the selective enrichment function of UiO-68-SMe into single entity.

Melamine-derived mesoporous carbon, which was obtained from pyrolysis of modified melamine, was employed for the purpose of eliminating trace amounts of Hg(II) from honeysuckle decoction. The specific surface area of the mesoporous carbons with N-functional (MCN) was 648.372 m·g.

The development of binding gels with a fast uptake rate, high capacity, and good selectivity could be beneficial for trace Hg(II) detection based on the DGT technology. In this study, a novel PAN@MoS/rGO-DGT was assembled by using the nanocomposite embedded in polyacrylonitrile membrane (PAN@MoS/rGO) as the binding phase. The interior regular finger-like macropore of the gel provided a convenient channel for the rapid mass diffusion of Hg(II), and the abundant sulfur offered the paramount driving force for trapping Hg(II).

In this work, a porphyrin metalation-based ratiometric absorbance and fluorescence dual model immunoassay was proposed to detect ochratoxin A (OTA). 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(1-methyl-4-pyridinio) porphyrin (TMPyP) was pink and had a strong fluorescence, upon coordination with Hg(II), its fluorescence was quenched and the color became green. The alkaline phosphatase can catalyze the dephosphorylation of ascorbic acid 2-phosphate to produce ascorbic acid, which can reduce the coordinated Hg(II) to Hg(0) and then dissociated from TMPyP, its fluorescence was recovered.

An easily synthesized reaction-based probe for the fluorescence detection of Hg ions using was reported. The designed probe exhibited "turn-on" fluorescence response towards Hg ions via deprotection of the thiocarbonate-protecting group to alcohol in the HEPES/EtOH=8:2 (v/v, 5 mM, pH 7.4).
