A new physical mechanism or mode of plastic deformation in nanocrystalline metals and ceramics is suggested and theoretically described. The mode represents the cooperative grain boundary (GB) sliding and stress-driven GB migration process. It is theoretically revealed that the new deformation mode is more energetically favorable than "pure" GB sliding and enhances the ductility of nanocrystalline solids in wide ranges of their structural parameters.

High-performance saccharide-based cryoprotectants are gaining increasing attention for their application in frozen meat products. While various physiochemical and/or enzymatic approaches have been employed to enhance the cryoprotective efficacy of saccharides, potential synergistic effects between different saccharide candidates remain largely unexplored. This study, for the first time, demonstrates that the combinational use of β-cyclodextrin (CD) and carrageenan oligosaccharide (CGO) exhibit significant synergistic cryoprotective effects on surimi myofibrillar proteins (MP) during freeze-thaw cycles.

Sex determination and differentiation in zebrafish involve a complex interaction of male and female-promoting factors. While Dmrt1 has been established as a critical male-promoting factor, the roles of Anti-Müllerian hormone (Amh) and androgen signaling remain less clear. This study employed an estrogen-deficient zebrafish model (cyp19a1a-/-) to dissect individual and combined roles of Amh and androgen receptor (Ar) signaling in gonadal differentiation and gametogenesis.

Urbanization has been recognized as an effective measure to promote socioeconomic development; however, it leads to cropland and habitat loss and aggravates ecosystem services (ESs), which have not been sufficiently and systematically revealed from the perspective of agriculture-ecology-economy nexus (AEEN). To address these knowledge gaps, this novel study adopted a hotspot of urbanization to examine the response dynamics of ESs and agricultural production to urbanization, as well as their regime shifts and interactions, by employing statistical records, satellite images, and incorporating biophysical model-based ESs into AEEN. In the past four decades, Guangdong has undergone rapid urbanization and associated landscape transformations, represented by cropland and wetland shrinkage and urban expansion, particularly around central city clusters, which have caused ESs degradation and grain productivity reduction.

Document Image Translation (DIT) aims to translate texts on document images from one language to another. It is a multi-modal task involving cooperation of text and layout. Current approaches either handle layout and translation as separate processes, risking accumulative errors, or use vanilla end-to-end encoder-decoder models to capture layout implicitly, often suffering inadequate layout incorporation.

In order to reconstruct 3D clothed human with accurate fine-grained details from sparse views, we propose a deep cooperating two-level global to fine-grained reconstruction framework that constructs robust global geometry to guide fine-grained geometry learning. The core of the framework is a novel visibility aware Transformer VAT, which bridges the two-level reconstruction architecture by connecting its global encoder and fine-grained decoder with two pixel-aligned implicit functions, respectively. The global encoder fuses semantic features of multiple views to integrate global geometric features.
