Long-range protein coupling mediated by critical low-energy modes of tubular lipid membranes.

Published: July 2010

We develop a theory of a resonant effect in protein-membrane coupling taking place in the vicinity of instabilities in tubular lipid membranes (TLMs) under longitudinal force and pressure difference constraints. Two critical low-energy modes defining the stability domain boundaries are found. We show that these modes mediate long-range TLM-protein coupling and interactions between absorbed proteins. Besides, TLM mechanical instabilities strongly influence protein desorption and protein cluster nucleation on TLMs. Model predictions can be tested over a large spectrum of mechanochemical conditions.

Long-Term Efficacy and Safety of Nutritional and Pharmacological Strategies for Obesity.

Curr Obes Rep

January 2025

Dipartimento di Medicina Clinica e Chirurgia, Centro Italiano per la cura e il Benessere del Paziente con Obesità (C.I.B.O), Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II, Via Sergio Pansini 5, Naples, 80131, Italy.

Purpose Of Review: This review examines the long-term efficacy and safety of various nutritional and pharmacological strategies for managing obesity. The focus is on the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), very low-energy ketogenic therapy (VLEKT), and pharmacological interventions such as naltrexone/bupropion and liraglutide. Given the chronic nature of obesity, understanding the sustainability and impact of these treatments over time is critical.

The rapid development of delivery systems for cosmetics has revealed two critical challenges in the field: enhancing the solubility of active ingredients and ensuring the stability of natural materials used in cosmetics. Nanoemulsion technology has emerged as an indispensable solution for addressing these challenges, not only enhancing the stability of cosmetics but also improving the solubility of pharmaceuticals and active ingredients with poor solubility. Nanoemulsion formulations have reinforced stability and amended the bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs.

Distinguishing whether a system supports alternate low-energy (locally stable) states-stable (true vacuum) versus metastable (false vacuum)-by direct observation can be difficult when the lifetime of the state is very long but otherwise unknown. Here we demonstrate, in a tractable model system, that there are physical phenomena on much shorter timescales that can diagnose the difference. Specifically, we study the time evolution of the magnetization following a quench in the tilted quantum Ising model, and show that its magnitude spectrum is an effective diagnostic.

Natural and anthropogenic factors controlling organic carbon storage in riverine wetlands along South Korea's four rivers.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Division of Earth and Environmental System Sciences, Department of Oceanography, Pukyong National University, 45 Yongso-ro, Nam-gu, 48513, Busan, Republic of Korea.

This study explores carbon sequestration in South Korea's riverine wetlands, focusing on the four major rivers: Han, Yeongsan, Geum, and Nakdong. Field data from the Yeongsan River wetland, including 3D topography surveys, grainsize analyses, and loss-on-ignition measurements, were used to assess carbon stocks and their environmental drivers. The Yeongsan River was selected as a representative site due to its geomorphological, hydrological, and climatic similarities with the other three major rivers, which influence sediment transport and carbon dynamics.
