Lesion Morphometry of the Pentaspline Pulsed Field Ablation Catheter: Understanding Catheter Pose, Rotation, and Dosing.

Circ Arrhythm Electrophysiol

December 2024

Helmsley Electrophysiology Center, Department of Cardiology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY (K.W., M.N., V.Y.R., J.S.K.).

Background: The pentaspline pulsed field ablation catheter achieves pulmonary vein isolation using 8 stacked, pose-specific applications with rotation. The morphology of pose-specific, single or double applications has not been described.

Methods: One or 2 applications were delivered to select veins and discrete atrial and ventricular sites in 9 swine.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of dexmedetomidine, a selective α2 noradrenergic agonist, as a potential treatment for insomnia, especially in patients dealing with heightened distress, through new oro-mucosal delivery methods.
  • Two formulations (sublingual and buccal) were tested in a pilot and main study involving both good and poor sleepers, focusing on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles alongside a range of sleep assessments.
  • Results showed that buccal dexmedetomidine was quickly absorbed and effectively reduced sleep latency and increased NREM sleep duration in poor sleepers, while not significantly affecting cortisol or heart rate levels.

Meditating on psychedelics. A randomized placebo-controlled study of DMT and harmine in a mindfulness retreat.

J Psychopharmacol

October 2024

Psychedelic Research and Therapy Development, Department of Adult Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychiatric University Clinic Zurich, University of Zurich, Zurich, Switzerland.

Background: In recent years, both meditation and psychedelics have attracted rapidly increasing scientific interest. While the current state of evidence suggests the promising potential of psychedelics, such as psilocybin, to enhance meditative training, it remains equivocal whether these effects are specifically bound to psilocybin or if other classical psychedelics might show synergistic effects with meditation practice. One particularly promising candidate is -dimethyltryptamine (DMT), an active ingredient of ayahuasca.

Connectivity of floodplain influences riverine carbon outgassing and dissolved carbon transport.

Sci Total Environ

May 2024

School of Renewable Natural Resources, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA 70803, USA.

Rivers not only function as a conduit for the delivery of terrestrial constituents to oceans, but they also serve as an essential medium for biogeochemical processing of the constituents. While extensive research has been conducted on carbon transport in many rivers, little is known about carbon transformation in engineered rivers reconnected with their floodplain network. Being the largest distributary of the levee-confined Mississippi River (MR), the Atchafalaya River (AR) carries 25 % of the MR water, flowing through North America's largest freshwater swamp basin and emptying into the Gulf of Mexico.

Background: Remote monitoring (RM) of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) patients is now considered standard of care. However, a fundamental requirement of RM is continuous connectivity between the patient's implanted device and the CIED manufacturer's central server. This study examined the rate of RM disconnections in CIED recipients and the impact of short message service (SMS) to facilitate reconnections.
